What’s In My Shower & Tub: Summer 2014

I am such a seasonal kind of gal, changing up not only my wardrobe, accessories, and even what I eat with the seasons, but also what kinds of products I like to use for my personal hygiene and enjoyment.  Now that we’re well into summer I thought I would share the bath and body products I’m currently using and loving in both my shower & tub.

What’s In My Shower?

✻ LUSH Big Shampoo – I wash my hair with this salt-based shampoo once a week as a clarifying treatment. I love how clean it makes my hair feel without stripping it. I wouldn’t personally use this more than once a week, though, because it might be too drying. It leaves my hair feeling light as air and so fluffy!

✻ Organix Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Shampoo and Conditioner – I’ve been using both of these products for several months now and continue to enjoy them.  I have come to realize recently, however, that my hair seems to do better when I switch up my regular shampoo and conditioner every few months.  I will probably tuck these big bottles which last me a very long time away for a bit and try something new for the fall.  I’d love any suggestions you might have for fine hair.

✻ Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque – This is another longtime favorite of mine, which I pair with my once a week clarifying wash.  I use the tiniest bit of this just in my ends and leave it in for two minutes tops.  Not only does it smell amazing, it helps keeps my ends moisturized and healthy without being too heavy.  Again, I wouldn’t use this product more than once a week with my hair texture.  One pot of this lasts me well over a year!

✻ EcoTools EcoPouf Net Sponge – My new favorite loofah, this one from EcoTools is made from 100% recycled sponge.  It’s neither too flimsy nor too stiff.

✻ Epicuren Tropical Lave Body Cleanser – I received this delightful body wash in my PopSugar Must Have Special Edition Resort Box this spring and tucked it away with summer showers in mind.  I love using this luxuriously silky body wash with a wonderfully refreshing tropical scent.  It is delightful!

Tree Hut Shea Sugar Body Scrub in Hawaiian Kukui – I tried out one of these scrubs for the first time this past spring and loved it so much I am using a different scent for summer.  It is the perfect combination of moderate exfoliation with a moisturizing effect.

✻ Origins Gloomaway Body Wash & Body Scrub – I love grapefruit scented products especially in the warmer months.  This delightfully refreshing scent from Origins is the perfect summer time shower pick-me-up.  The body wash suds up nicely.  I prefer stand alone scrubs, as opposed to this scrub/cleanser duo, which is ok but doesn’t pack quite the same exfoliating punch as other formulas.

Schick Hydro Silk Razor – A girl needs a good razor and this one from Schick hasn’t let me down yet!  I like that it has five blades for a close shave with addition of the safety bars and moisture serum to avoid nicks.

✻ Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Smooth Shave Gel – Another oldie but goodie for me, I’ve used this shave gel for my entire adult life!  It doesn’t aggravate my skin, which is all I ask for from a shave gel, to be honest!  Plus the scent is mild, pleasant, and doesn’t linger.

Yes To Grapefruit Daily Facial Scrub – I love this simple scrub that is neither to harsh nor too gentle for my oily, acne-prone skin.  I use it about three times a week.  The grapefruit scent is so refreshing for summer!

Origins Gloomaway Body Soufflé – I do love it when my moisturizers match my shower gels.  This body soufflé is light yet moisturizing and the scent is perfect for me right now.

SachaJuan Body Lotion in Shiny Citrus – Yet another PopSugar Must Have acquisition, this wonderful lotion came in my June Box (I really love this subscription, if you couldn’t tell!).  The lightweight formula sinks into the skin quickly and has a very nice citrus/herbal scent.  I like to use it on the days I use the Epicuren Tropical Lave.

What’s In My Tub?

Aura Cacia Mineral Bath – I have become quite enamored with these mineral baths this year.  They absorb quickly into the water creating a wonderfully relaxing aromatherapy experience.  I also find that they add moisturizing properties to the water leaving my skin feeling smooth post bath.  I am really enjoying the Euphoric Ylang Ylang and Clearing Eucalyptus scents this summer.

Hugo Naturals Bath Bomb – Another favorite this year, these bath bombs are so moisturizing and last for at least two to three baths even in my extra large tub.  My current favorite is Eucalyptus, Rosemary, & Mint, which is such rejuvenating scent combination.

Erin Condren Island Fleur Body Butter – I received this as a gift with purchase from an ErinCondren.com order I placed this past spring.  It has such a delightful tropical floral scent.  It’s definitely on the thicker side which is why I prefer to use it after my nighttime bath.  I go to bed smelling like paradise!

✻ Henri Bendel Candles in Pink Grapefruit and Pomegranate – These were a beautiful gift from a friend for my birthday this year.  I love burning them together for a fruit punch effect.  They are sweet but not overpoweringly so, with a nice throw.

I go into more detail about each product in my coordinating video below:

I would love to know what bath and body products you’re using and loving this summer if you care to share!

  1. If you are looking for products you should check out Paula Begoun’s (aka the Cosmetics Cop) site. She does have her own skin care line but she reviews products too. You can search her reviews by brand or by product. There are skin care, body care, hair, cosmetics. There must be tens of thousands of reviews.

She has tons of facts that you can educate yourself on how to buy products. For example facial skin care products in a jar are pretty much useless since all the air that gets into the jar, not to mention your fingers, destroys all the good things they put in the product. Or that products that are fragranced may smell great but can be irritating to the skin.

I searched for your Yes to Grapefruit face scrub you can see the results here: http://www.paulaschoice.com/beautypedia-skin-care-reviews/by-brand/yes-to/_/Yes-To-Grapefruit-Daily-Facial-Scrub

  2. Hi Jen,
I’m planning a trip to Disney World in December (super excited!). I want to try some of the Disney restaurants but there are so many options and I’m getting a bit overwhelmed. I’ll be in a group of 4 adults but most of the reviews I can find online are catered towards kid-friendly dining. I know you and Don are Disney veterans and always seem to have your trips so well planned. Could you give me a few recommendations of your favourite places to try?

    1. We love California Grill, Le Cellier, and the Yachtsman Steakhouse among others for a wonderfully tasty, adult dining experience.

  3. Hi Jen!

Thanks for sharing with us! For shampoo and conditioner for fine hair, I’d recommend Philip Kingsley’s Body Building shampoo and conditioner: http://youtu.be/Oehy5cZFVPM . Philip is a world renowned Trichologist (someone specializes in hair and scalp health). Philip has a very holistic view of hair and scalp health. It’s pretty cool how certain products from his line were created specifically for certain movie stars, like the Elasticizer for Audrey Hepburn’s over-processed hair and Flaky Itchy Shampoo for Sir Laurence Olivier.

It’s actually a very common misconception that hair gets used to certain products over a period of time. Philip discusses it in this YouTube video: http://youtu.be/8uozNO8KfaU

Also, silicones, waxes, petroleum and certain oils in hair care products can create a stubborn build up on the hair that requires the use of a sulfate based shampoo. Sulfate-free shampoos don’t remove silicones, heavy oils and waxes very well. Build up is usually worse if your hair is fine.

  4. I’ve been using Wen for my hair…I really like it and QVC has great specials on it every so often. I think they even have one for fine hair. I also love using Cerava face products because my skin tends to be sensitive. I use the cleanser and moisturizers (am and pm). I like that it doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry and stiff. The dermatologist suggested it and I’ve had a lot of luck with it. I also use the Clarisonic every so often with it. I feel that it’s a nice balance of deep cleaning without going over board.

  5. Hi Jen,

For Shampoo recommendations I highly recommend Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Shampoo and there Super Rich Conditioner (Its not too much for fine hair). It smells amazing and I love it! I have fine hair but a lot of it and it doesn’t make my hair look weighed down or greasy.

You can purchase it at Ulta (I am about 99% sure lol).

  6. Hi – how did those organix hair products work for you? I have fine hair but lots of it… Can’t seem to get much volume. Nothing is working! I use Moroccan oil brand, and also “sudzz” brand (that has worked well for me) – what has worked best for you as far as shampoo/conditioner? Have you thought about going to Sally’s beauty supply? There’s a brand called ion (?) that they recommend, but I haven’t tried it. Mane and tail works well, I noticed volume with it. 🙂

  7. For sure, Pure Abundance Volumizing Clay Conditioner by Aveda. I have really thin/fine hair and this is my favorite and a little goes a long way, 1 bottle lasts over a year. By looking at it you would think it would weigh your hair down but it doesn’t at all. I switch up my Aveda shampoos between Pure Abundance and Rosemary Mint. But, I think I will give the Organix you suggested a try next time I need to purchase shampoo.

I am wearing a similar shirt in the same color today as you are on this video…it is a great color on you. 🙂

  8. I just started using L’Oreal Paris Advanced Haircare Volume Filler Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner. It is in a black bottle with a dark purple lid. It makes my hair feel very clean and light. I’ve noticed my hair does feel thicker too! Also, your hair will smell amazing all day. Plus, it’s reasonably priced and easy to find. I found mine at Target! I highly recommend it!
