Week In Review | June 1 – June 7, 2015

It’s beginning to feel a lot like summer!  After an iffy May, the weather is finally starting to heat up around here and we’re busy getting ready for the season.  I’d like to share some tidbits from my life last week as well as an accompanying photo recap with selections from my Instagram feed with you.

Normally this time of year I’d be splitting my workouts between running and inline skating outside, but I’m sticking to my home gym for the time being.  After taking two full weeks off exercise due to a back injury, I was pumped to get back on the elliptical machine last week.  I’m feeling good and planning on slowly reincorporating light weight training this week.  Hopefully I’ll be hitting the pavement again soon, but I know it’s best to wait until I’ve built my strength up to protect from injury.  While nothing beats exercising outside in my opinion, I can at least catch up with my favorite YouTube channels while I’m on the elliptical.

My husband, Don, has been amping up his fitness as well now that he’s feeling fully recovered from his back surgery early last month.  He’s been using the elliptical and easing back into golf, his favorite pastime.  Don is doing so much better than he has in a long time and is happy to be back in the swing of things (pun intended 😉 ).  I couldn’t be happier for him!

In addition to gearing up our fitness, we’ve been switching up our nutrition for the summer months, which mainly means a lot more grilled items.  Don made his signature grilled shrimp fajitas early last week and we gathered with the Ross family mid-week for a build-your-own-burger dinner.  I’ve picked back up one of my favorite warm weather breakfasts which is cottage cheese with fresh berries.  All of this grilled and fresh food feels like summer to me!

There are signs of the seasons shifting outside our home as well.  With the last of the spring bulbs finally fading and the cool weather behind us, I can finally plant my summer annuals, including our flower beds and pots.  The roses in the neighborhood have started to bloom and the bees are getting busy!  The air feels heavier with the humidity settling in and the summer perennials are thriving between sunny and stormy days.

I’m still thick into my “spring cleaning,” which more like a year long purge process rather than a seasonal one.  I managed to weed through ten years worth of paper memorabilia last week (which I will share in my upcoming craft closet clean out post), most of which I purged.  I did hold onto the most important momentos and all photos.  I found a few random shots of me as a baby, one of which I shared on Instagram.  I thought it was interesting how many people thought I looked like my niece Grace, to whom I have no genetic ties.  We don’t really look anything alike in person.  Grace is super cute, of course, so if those comments just means people think I was a cute baby, I’ll take it!

One of the highlights of my week was receiving a PR box from Erin Condren previewing the new 2015-16 Life Planners.  They are stunning!  I put up an in-depth video and blog post featuring what came in my box, both of which you can find here if you missed them.  Judging by the comments I’ve received so far, the rose gold edition is going to be a big hit.  The new lineup launches today!  You can receive $10 off your first Erin Condren purchase by using my referral link if you’d like.  Simply sign up for the e-newsletter and the coupon will be sent to your email.

I spent my weekend working for the most part, but was happy to steal some time gardening and lounging in the yard with my pup, Winnie.  I know I’ve been really slacking on her blog this year and I hope to change that this summer.  I decided to film a fun tag with her and answer some of your questions about Winnie in this video:

I’d love to hear how your week was if you care to share.  I hope the sun is shining wherever you are!
Happy (almost) Summer!

  1. Glad you guys are both better and getting in shape! 🙂 The weather in Portugal is amazing, since early May, it’s so warm (86+), so Summer is here for sure! I’m also sticking to grilled food but that’s my fav way of cooking year round. I posted a planner review on my blog – I’m more of a ring planner person, and this time I tried something new!
    Have a good week!

  2. I ordered my Life Planner today! I have to say your review and video on it sold it to me!!! 😉 Thanks for sharing these tidbits of your life every week, I always look forward to reading during my lunch break! Have a great rest of the week!

  3. I love hearing about Winnie. I too have a Shih Tzu and it is fun to hear how other Shih Tzu’s behave. Mine also needs a place for his chin. I laughed at your recent video with Don holding Winnie and he made that statement. I showed it to my DH and said see it isn’t just our dog. I also took my dog to a pet training class in order to socialize him when he was little and he was terrified of the other dogs, even the little ones. Maybe it is a Shih Tzu trait. Anyway thanks for the fun video with Winnie!

  4. I really en joyed watching the Furry Friend Tag video you did with Winnie! Being an animal lover I love seeing and hearing about other people’s fur babies. Your meals looked delicious! We grill all the time in the summer too! Thanks for sharing! I can’t wait to see your craft room purge and update.

  5. Lovely week in review!lovely post!
Thank you for the video,I really enjoyed watching.
    Thank you for sharing..

  6. Hi Jen! I’m glad that both you and Don are both healed from your back injuries. I too am slowly recovering from an awful allergic session this past weekend with my family in Ottawa, Canada for my mum’s birthday. Everyone had a good time except for me. 🙁 On a much more interesting note, I was browsing throughout your old WIR and I came across your blog post from your trip to Arizona, and the video of “The TMI Tag” was embedded in it! I watched the video several times and I decided to write my newest blog post with my own answers to the questions. Here’s the link to my blog post for to enjoy reading: http://klsmgypsytraveller.blogspot.ca/2015/06/the-tmi-tag.html
Hope that you have a great week
    Take care

Been enjoying looking at the new planners the last couple of days…not sure what to go for yet!!! Can’t decide! I’m loving watching ure purging…I really need to get cracking! I hoard so much paper stuff it is out of control lol! Looking forward to ure future videos. Glad ur both feeling a lot better with your backs xx

  8. Glad your enjoying the nice weather me and the girls decided to head to starbucks to try out there new puppochinos for the girls and I enjoy there teavana lemonade with Valencia orange refresher instead of water it’s a favorite summer drink.

      1. It’s a small cup of whip cream that starbucks gives out. Our starbucks will put it in a cute little cup. But you can get them for the dogs. I don’t ussually give lilly the whole thing as she has a sensitive stomach but she does love them . I did ask a and there whip cream is non dairy for the puppochinos.

  9. Sounds like a great week! Thanks for sharing!

LOVED the Winnie tag! I love dogs – I have 3 🙂 They are my fur-kids!! My dogs have a ton of nicknames too!!
