Week In Review (June 16 – June 22, 2014)

My Week In Review (otherwise known as WIR) posts are just that: a review of my past week.  I post an update here every Tuesday sharing some tidbits of my previous week as well as an accompanying photo recap with selections from my Instagram.  Here’s the buzz from my week:

Last week flew by in a blur as I scrambled to get all of my end of the week posts edited and scheduled in advance for yet another long weekend trip.  We’ve been busy travelers this year!  As you can see, my dog Winnie was not enthused when I started packing again.  As much as I hated to leave my girl when we had just returned home from our weekend in St. Louis and she was still under the weather, we could not miss this family reunion.  Luckily, she started to feel better by the time we had to go and left her in the care of her wonderfully attentive Aunt Julie.  I came home to find her happy and healthy once again!

While Winnie might not be a fan of my new suitcase, I am definitely loving it!  I tested out the Erin Condren Party Pops Luggage for this trip and must say I think I might be a “hard shell” suitcase convert.  Not only is it too cute to boot, it is also super easy to pack and organize.  I plan on sharing a proper review later on in July during my annual Travel Series on OLJ.

You can receive $10 off your first purchase when you sign up for the Erin Condren newsletter (which means you receive the occasional email on current promotions and new products from them) by clicking here

We flew out to New York for a family reunion on Don’s father’s side of the family.  Don and I finished listening to The Hobbit audio book on the way from the airport to Long Island, which we had started the previous weekend for our St. Louis road trip.  I’ve been really enjoying knitting while I listen to audio books while poolside and during travel, so I decided to sign up for an Audible account.  While I still prefer actually reading paper books, it’s nice to be able to “read” while I knit.  I just started Tina Fey’s Bossypants, which definitely has me chuckling!

Of course, Bean Bunny made the trip with us.  I’m having so much fun posing him for cute Instagram shots whenever we travel.  Already in his short time with us, he’s visited Utah, the Dominican Republic, St. Louis, and now Southampton, Long Island.  We have many other fun adventures planned for the remainder of the year and I plan to keep up with his little photo travel journal.  You can see all of his posts on Instagram with #BeanBunnyWorldTraveler if you’d like!

As for our weekend, we flew out on Thursday with Don’s folks, his sister, her husband, and their baby, Grace.  That girl is such a good traveler!  At 13 months old, Grace is very busy learning new things and discovering everything with awe!  Watching a baby delight in things both big and small is a wonderful reminder to enjoy the present moment.  She was in good company over the weekend with Don’s visiting cousins who also have growing families.  There are now seven kids under the age of seven on this side of the family!  We thoroughly enjoyed watching them play and interact, or “baby tv,” as we like to call it.

The extended family got together every night for dinner, leaving most of the day on Friday and Saturday for exploring and enjoying the absolutely stunning weather.  I loved my morning runs to the beach and back to the Southampton Inn, where we have also stayed during previous visits.  We window shopped around town and ate delicious meals out together.  We also got some family beach time in on Saturday with much of the clan.  My father-in-law joked that if we had brought one more sun tent they would have charged us for a residency permit! 😉

On Saturday night, Don’s father and his sister’s hosted a special party celebrating Don’s grandparent’s 65th wedding anniversary.  It was the perfect evening to be outside eating good food and sharing stories and memories with family.  On Sunday morning, we all gathered one last time for a farewell brunch before heading back to the airport to return home.

If you’d like to see more from my weekend, check out my vlog:

I feel so blessed to have married into this family.  I only wish we all lived closer together so that we could see each other more often.  I have so many fond memories from the past ten years of gathering with these lovely people and I look forward to many more!  How often do you get to see your extended family?  Do you have large gatherings every so often or smaller, more frequent ones?  I’d love to know if you care to share!

  1. Great vlog, Jen! I loved when you & Don were explaining the matching shirts! I also liked when Don wanted to tell us about the golf he was watching 🙂 🙂 You mentioned where you were reminding you of Carmel, that’s where I live. I remember your last vlogs from here! 🙂

  2. I always loving hearing about marriages that are still going strong after that many years. My husband and I share an anniversary with Don’s grandparents (June 4th), so that was very neat to hear. :o)

  3. I love the idea of family reunions, it’s not something so big over here in the Uk! I just love the matching shirts, I’ve seen a lot of American families doing that in Walt Disney World and it makes for great pictures! Looks like you guys had a great time! Grace is adorable, she’s growing up so fast too!

  4. Hi Jen! Sounds like it was a fun trip. I was just wondering, do you and Don get the opportunity to babysit Grace much? I bet your sister in law and her husband feel very fortunate to live near so much family that are able to lend a hand!

  5. Hi Jen! Love your vlogs! As much as you and Don love traveling, I think you should look into Door County, WI for your next mini getaway!! Absolutely beautiful and reminds me very much of cape cod!

    1. My parents have been there a few times and love it! It’s something like a 7 or 8 hour drive from where we live, which is why we haven’t made the trek yet. Hopefully someday!

      1. Hi Jen!

I am originally from Chicago and we used to have property in Door County. It is so beautiful and under a 5 hour car trip from Chicago. Not sure where you live in the Chicago area, but you would love Door County!

Thanks for this vlog, I really enjoyed it and thanks for taking the time to include us in your trip! 🙂

  6. Omg, I was actually thinking it looked like Carmel right before you said that. I used to live in CA and frequented Carmel and Monterey when I was a little girl :). Thank you for sharing and for giving me nostalgic feelings haha!

  7. I had mixed feelings watching this video. I always enjoy seeing you guys and what you are up to, but i loved from Long island to Atlanta just about a year ago and this made me so homesick!! I knew all the places you were at and miss them, and the beach, terribly! I am glad you had a good time visiting family. I wish i had a family that got together for reunions, it must be very nice. Glad you had a nice time and I hope you get to enjoy being home for a bit before your next one. Also, very glad to hear Winnie is feeling better. She is too cute for words!

  8. I always love your videos and especially the blogs that go along with them – I can tell how much time you put into it and that is admirable. However, when you say “answer us in the comments” still in your vlogs, it makes me so annoyed at the ignorant and cruel people that made you turn the comments off. Hopefully one day we can have that open communication again. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I’m sorry, sometimes I forget not to say that in MHWL videos. I do hope to bring back comments (with moderation) soon!

  9. Loved this weekend’s vlog (and a long weekend at that – double yay!) 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing your trip with us – looks like it was a wonderful time with family!

    1. Oh, I forgot to say that it was so sweet that Don wanted to tell us about the golf 🙂 It’s always a pleasure to see the two of you together in the vlogs!

  10. I just love how husbands, mine included, just can’t exactly say that a shirt or skirt is see through hahahaha I don’t get why it’s so difficult for them to say. You guys are soo cute in the matching outfits. Somethings are meant to be just for you guys I agree =)

  11. Hi Jen
Just curious, isn’t Aunt Julie part of Don’s side of the family? If so, why didn’t she go too? and what happens with Winnie when Julie can’t watch her? I loved the vlog by the way, and enjoy seeing you and Don.

  12. What a fun vlog (as per usual of course!) I do love love LOVE your travel vlogs, but I miss your daily day-in-the-life ones too… especially after just watching Winnie’s DITL Utah vlog yesterday… I love your pet care tips! 🙂

OK, now I guess I’m gonna go there… Caveats alert… I hate the thought of pressuring you in any way, and I hope you know that I (we) who follow with love and support do so unconditionally… and I’m sure you’ll discuss this when/if appropriate… and I think it’s beyond presumption to tell any blogger/vlogger what they should or should not share, but I would just like to go on record with this…

My August will not be the same…. nay it will pretty much SUCK if I have to face the Atlanta heat without your VLOGUST!!!!

OK… there, I said it… I feel a bit guilty, but know this is sent with love! 😉

    1. You are very sweet. I’m afraid Vlogust is not in the cards this year, but I do plan on continuing with my weekend vlogs.

  13. Hi Jen,

Looks like you and Don are having a wonderful summer!!! The beach looked so nice and relaxing! Hopefully my DH and I will take a small weekend trip to see my brother and his family in Long Island this August. I think we will stay at the inn where you stayed it seemed really nice. I have hinted to my DH that a getaway in August would do us so much good! Our daughter is getting married on the 4th of July in less then a week and we have been crazy busy finishing all the last minute details. All of our close and extended family will be there. Who knew there was so much to do in the few weeks before the big day! We are going to take a nice break tonight to watch Steve Martin’s Father of the Bride. We adore that movie and I laugh and cry all through it! The wedding is going to be vintage including my daughter’s dress and they will be getting married in a small country chapel that was built in the late 1800’s not far from our home and where she grew up. Everything came together so beautifully! I would love to send you some photos if you would like. Yes, we have many family gatherings in our family too. Our close family my brothers, sisters, all our children and my grandchildren ( yes I have two and I am a young grandma kinda!) all 20 of us have dinner at my parent’s home every Sunday evening. My Dad does all the cooking and we all take turns bringing a dessert. That is the day I allow myself to indulge during the week. YUM! I am planning on making those brownies when my turn comes around again. You made them in one of your Utah vlogs and they looked so yummy! We will also be having a big family reunion on my side the day after the wedding at my Dad’s house to get together once again that same weekend and my husband will be having his side family reunion 2 weeks from then. BUSY JULY!!! As you and Don, we are also so blessed to have a wonderful family and we all treasure each other so much!!! I couldn’t imagine our life any different! When I sit down to write you a note on occassion it turns into a letter, it is pretty long I do apologize but I do value you as one of my many friends. You have been a very positive influence in my life. When I was ill a while ago I seemed to lose a lot of hope because it took so long for me to get well. I watched ALOT of your content on your channels when I was recovering. I just had my yearly checkup, blood work and all that fun stuff my doctor said that my health and all my tests are fantastic and she has asked me what I have been doing because she has never seen me so healthy in 10 years. Now that I am happy and healthy I wanted to thank you for so much for you and everything you do. Even though I am 52 years young I feel like I am only 30. You have inspired me and to take action in taking so much better care of myself, my doggy and my family. I just wanted to say a huge thank you! Well it was nice to sit down for a while! I will end my note and continue on with my endless list for the fast approaching nuptials. Take care and have a wonderful weekend!!!

    1. Congratulations on your daughter’s upcoming nuptials! Sounds like you have a great weekend planned. Keep up the good work with your health! 🙂

  14. I loved seeing this video of you and your family. Your husband and you are just adorable together and I hope there will be more videos. I have no idea what was said that caused the comments to be turned off on the video, but some people are just mean and miserable and when they make ugly comments it only reflects on them and not you. Anyway, keep up the good work!
