Week In Review | February 9 – February 15, 2015

Happy Monday!  I wanted to share some tidbits from my life last week as well as an accompanying photo recap with selections from my Instagram feed with you.  Here’s the buzz:

If I had to sum up my past week in three words, they would be: focus, make, and love.  All of these words apply so well to the circumstances and people that are at the forefront of my daily experience right now.  They are powerful words to reflect an exciting time of change in my life.  Things are shifting and it’s not always easy and it’s not always what I hope or expect, but that’s all part of the ride and I am loving it.  There’s something so invigorating about change, especially when it’s not in my comfort zone, that makes me feel alive.  I wouldn’t want live in a constant state of adrenaline and nervous excitement, but every once in awhile it’s good to rev up the engines.  There’s a lot of recalibrating going on in my public and private life and they are choices I’ve had the great fortune to make myself rather than be forced to make.  I recognize that this is a blessing and I am doing my best to stay present throughout it all even while my mind is racing a mile a minute with all of the possibilities.

All of that time spent focusing on recalibration can make a girl hungry!  I’m discovering more and more just how much my brain needs fuel like my body.  Lately I’ve been really into citrus, since it’s in season.  I had the great pleasure of trying Sumo Citrus, a tangerine-orange hybrid, last week.  Holy cow, how sweet!  I’ve been kicking myself all week for only buying two.  You can bet I’ll be coming home with a sack full next time I go to the store.  I find it’s important to make sure I have enough protein in my diet, as I tend to automatically reach for fruits and veggies first.  To me, there’s nothing like a juicy burger with all of my favorite fixings when I’m really hungry.  When I posted the photo in the collage above, I received a lot of comments and concerns about its doneness (or lack thereof).  I’ve eaten medium-rare burgers my entire life without issue, although I do recognize there is a greater risk for bacteria in doing so.  Please know that Don and I take extra care with the meats that we purchase.

The end of my week was all about LOVE and taking time to show my loved ones how much I care.  Every year I like to give little tokens of affection.  I usually send flowers or small gifts to those who live far away.  This year I decided to make a simple yet tasty treat for my family members who live close by.  Inspired by a photo I saw on Pinterest, I made Chocolate Dipped Rice Krispie Treats.  As you can see, they were well received by my niece, Grace.  I know that Valentine’s Day is a pretty commercial holiday, but I really enjoy the opportunity/excuse to show my loved ones I care with little gifts like this.

I also thought it’d be fun to share the Valentine’s Day love with an Instagram/Twitter giveaway.  There’s still time to enter!  You can find details on how here.  Please note that this giveaway ends at 6 PM tonight.

Don and I like to celebrate Valentine’s Day with each other in a bit of a grander fashion.  We decided to stop exchanging gifts a few years ago since it seemed like too much with our birthdays falling just a couple of weeks before the day of love (although, if you watch the video you’ll see that Don decided to break that agreement this year, not that I’m complaining 😉 ).  Instead, we find other ways to celebrate our love for one another.  This year, we decided to go on a day-ate (daytime date), that included a Chicago donut crawl and catching the new Fifty Shades of Grey movie.  We had quite the adventure!  I actually vlogged our day together if you’re interested in seeing how we spent Valentine’s Day:

We woke up to frigid wind chill temperatures on Sunday morning, but that didn’t deter me and Winnie from taking our morning constitutional.  We just bundled up and enjoyed the fresh air.  I took my Mom to see the Joffrey Ballet‘s winter program, Unique Voices.  I’ve loved going to the ballet ever since I was a little girl.  It’s a special tradition that my Mom and I still share.  When I returned home I was greeted by Don making homemade pasta for the first time using the pasta maker I bought him for his birthday.  Words cannot describe how scrumptious it was with his homemade bolognese sauce.  My weekend was filled with love and joy!  I can’t think of a better way to wrap up the week than to be surrounded by people and things (and pups) that I love.

That sums up the highlights from my week.  I’d love to hear from you about your week if you care to share!
Take good care…

  1. Wow those donuts looked amazing! Cute idea 🙂 We live in Arizona and recently moved to a new house that has all kinds of fruit-bearing trees in the backyard 🙂 Still getting a hang of the seasons of the different fruits, but I looked up last week to see that we have lemons and grapefruit! Totally feeling the citrus too! I wish the orange tree was in full bloom so I could make some grapefruit-orange juice, but I have been buying oranges at the store because I am in the citrus mood too 🙂

That’s awesome that Don made pasta! My fiance makes homemade pasta, and I knew he was the one when he spent hours making ravioli from scratch in our early dating days 🙂 Happy belated Valentine’s!

  2. Looks like a great week- I’m so glad you are still sharing odd parts of your life with us through vlogs 🙂 when I first started reading the post I read your three words as focus and make love lol- I thought you were over sharing for a moment. I then realised what you actually wrote! Woops! X

  3. Hi Jen!

I loved this blog post and the vlog as well, you guys are my favorite couple ever. This week was very busy for me at work but I’m happy because I over came a fear of mine of talking in front of a big crown, I was so nervous! Valentine’s day was awesome, we went to Kate Spade and my husband bought me a watch and some bow earrings. We also watched 50 shades, overall a great weekend.

  4. What an awesome week. I am so excited for you with all of the changes you have coming. I can’t imagine how inspired you must feel. You seem very happy. I loved the V-day video. You definitely gave me a list of doughnut shops to keep an eye on when I get home.

When I saw your burger photo my reaction was “that is perfect!” I’ve always been medium rare girl too.

  5. I loved your Valentine’s vlog. You and Don are so sweet and loving. The donuts looked scrumptious. I found myself smiling when I was watching your vlog. You looked so relaxed and radiant. Don is looking great too! You guys are so much fun to watch.

I tried the sumo citrus and they were delicious…however, there was a bit of a sticker shock when I looked at my receipt and realized I paid $13 for 5 oranges! Lol. But they were worth it!

Would you consider doing reviews on Don’s kitchen toys? I would love to know what he thinks about the air fryer and the pasta maker.

  6. Jennifer, It is so refreshing in this day of easy divorce to see a couple who are absolutely the best of friends. Your enjoyment in your shared day is infectious. Hooray to you for staying present in your growth journey and not letting your anxieties deter you from taking the next step towards building your brand. You are blessed with much in your life, but you are humble to a fault making you wonderfully relate-able to everyone. Such a fun vlog! Elizabeth

  7. Great WIR and yippee a vlog! Loved getting to tag along with you and Don on your Day-ate 🙂

The Donut Crawl is such a super idea! I love it! I’m totally craving a donut now too 😉 Lol! Please do the rest of your donut crawl a different day and bring us along too so we can see what you think of the other donut places you had on your list!!

Bubble tea is awesome! What flavor did you get? I see you got with pearls (that’s the “bubbles”) My favourite is Taro flavor with pearls! You should try that one next time and see if you like it!

Thanks again for a great vlog – it was so nice to get to “hang out” with you again!!

  8. Greetings from Colorado, Jen! I wanted to pop in and say, “Bravo!” I’m so pleased to see you dipping your toe in to the water by posting a vlog on what will be your “one” YouTube channel. Seeing a vlog there just felt so organic (not forced) and you and Don presented yourselves as comfortable and truly happy to share. Great job naming your last few videos as well; they are so clear. I just wanted to affirm the direction you are trying out! Carla

  9. Hi Jen! I hope that you had a great Valentine’s Day weekend! I, unfortunately, was feeling very ill all weekend; but somehow, found some inspiration to work on some new blog posts for my blog! I wanted to thank you for all of the advice that you’ve given me about my concerns of my parents not supporting my newest hobbies, and it definitely helped somewhat to clear the air over their feelings. I’ve decided to go with my gut feeling and continue to be a blogger, because I truly enjoy all of the ups and downs that go with this new hobby! It’s by far, the coolest thing ever! 🙂 I have a couple of questions for you:
    1. What sort of tea would you recommend to drink when you’re feeling ill?
    2. Will you be posting any Q&A style videos on your new channel? I really enjoyed watching those videos as it gave me a chance to get to know you a bit more
    3. I, just like you, suffer from both social anxiety and “Waiting Room Syndrome” while I’m in places like the doctor and the dentist, and I will be meeting my new dentist and my new doctors for the first time very soon! I’m feeling very anxious about it and I really want to appear somewhat confident when I meet them. Do you or any of your subscribers out there, have any advice on this?
    4. Will you be showing us any of your organizational-related projects?
Thanks for answering my questions! I really appreciate it!
    Take care;
    Katherine M.

    1. When I’m sick I like to drink less strong blends of herbal tea, like chamomile, mint, or ginger. I will definitely be doing Q&A videos every once in awhile. As for feeling nervous about new doctors, I find the best thing for me is to make some short notes of things I’d like to discuss before I go since I tend to get flustered and forget when I am there. And yes, I will be sharing organization projects as I tackle them still.

  10. Hi Jen, I loved watching your vlog as always!!

Just to let you know, because I don’t know if you are aware of it, but eating red meat has been associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer (http://www.who.int/cancer/prevention/en/ & http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Goodfood/Pages/red-meat.aspx)
I’m not saying this to be mean or anything, just want you to be aware of it. I’m currently doing a research master in Epidemiology and during courses about public health the possible dangers of eating red meat were mentioned. But of course, once in a while it’s ok to indulge in less healthy food!

    Take care,
    Else (from the Netherlands)
