Week In Review (August 11 – August 17, 2014)

My Week In Review (otherwise known as WIR) posts are just that: a review of my past week.  I post an update here every Tuesday sharing some tidbits of my previous week as well as an accompanying photo recap with selections from my Instagram.  Here’s the buzz from my week:

I’ve so enjoyed the glorious summer weather out here in sunny Utah!  Lately, the days have been hot without being oppressive, and super clear.  Dusk has produced some pretty magnificent sunsets.  The evenings have been cool, comfortable, and perfect for star gazing or just cuddling with loved ones by the outdoor fireplace.  I couldn’t ask for more beautiful weather in one of my all time favorite places with some of my all time favorite people! 🙂

That being said, there has been a summer storm or two every so often, which I personally enjoy.  There’s nothing quite like seeing a storm roll in from the mountains!  I’ve made good use out of the Eddie Bauer Rainfoil Jacket I hauled from the outlets when I was here this past spring.  It is the perfect three season rain jacket and I know I will get a lot of use out of it over the years.

We celebrated a very special birthday last week, as Winnie, our Shih Tzu pup, turned five on August 14.  I can’t believe she’s five already!  We celebrated the day together with some of her favorite things, including sleeping in and extra long morning snuggles in bed, greeting our friendly farm animal friends on our morning walk, a little taste of ice cream, an extra special treat, and a new toy.  Winnie ended the day happy and exhausted back in bed, her most favorite place to be.  I love my little angel and count my lucky stars that I am her human “Mommy.”

I stopped into Cost Plus World Market for the first time in ages since I had a coupon.  I don’t know why I don’t pop in there more frequently as they have some great finds at reasonable prices.  My main purpose for going in was to acquire a new basket to house my knitting projects and accessories in our bedroom at the Utah house.  I found the perfect one!  The Large Madras Handle Basket is just the right size to fit all I need without taking up too much floor space in our room.  I also bought a smaller Natural Oval Jackie Basket for toting things up and down to my target=”_blank”>Loftice (office in a loft), some heavy duty rubber gloves for Don to use when he’s cooking (like for brining and soaking wood for the smoker), some cute and very inexpensive earrings ($5!), and a couple of the Hello Kitty Cupcake Candies Tins I like to empty and clean out to use as small containers for Winnie’s treats in my purses.  I also grabbed a bag of the Ghirardelli Intense Dark Midnight Reverie Squares to try.  I’ve always preferred milk chocolate but am trying to learn to love the dark variety since it generally is better for you (if you’re going to eat chocolate, that is, which I am 😉 ).

Getting back to the topic of knitting, after a frustrating week of failing to grasp the popcorn/bobble cast on of my latest pattern attempt, the Lauren Cowl from my July KnitCrate subscription, I finally got it!  Huzzah!  I am now cruising along (which for me means knitting small portions at a rather slow pace).  I am very excited about how it is proceeding.  It’s nice to be working on a project that is actually doable for me!

Once again, the house is full as of this last weekend, as Don’s sister Emily, her husband, Dave, their sweet baby, Grace, and their Shih Tzu, Yoda, all arrived on Saturday.  It’s so nice to be reunited!  Suzanne made her famous meatballs with homemade sauce for their welcome dinner.  Don actually target=”_blank”>posted a video on this last year if you’re interested in the recipe.  We also acquired this super cute mini couch for Gracie to watch her favorite movie, Mary Poppins, in the entertainment room in the basement.  How cute is that!

All of the excitement of travel and being in a full house threw Grace off her schedule a bit and after a rough first night and napless day after, the family decided on a very quiet and low key Sunday with leftovers for dinner.  Don and I decided it was a good time to go out on a date, so we headed to Park City for dinner at Riverhorse.  It was delicious!  We couldn’t believe we’d never been before!  I highly recommend the trout main course and blueberry cobbler for dessert.  Yum!

I’d love to know what you’ve been up to in your spare time this August and how the weather is treating you wherever you’re from.  Please share in the comments if you’d like!  I hope that wherever you are, that you are able to grab a little sunshine, some fresh air, and time spent with loved ones every day.  Take care!

  1. Hi Jennifer, I have been watching u firever, UR my favorite person on you tube!! I am working in my sisters blig. She is a traveling nurse and I completely new to it all. I was wondering if u could give me done pointers on how to edit pictures? Add quotes, add texts to pictures? Do u have to pay for blogger? Pay for your name.com. It’s so overwhelming! I know UR the best person to ask. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my msg.

  2. I recently purchased a new raincoat, mine is from Karrimor and I know I’ll be getting plenty of use out of it. The only downside, I wish I’d opted for a fun colour like yours! A pop of colour on a gloomy day never fails to put a pep in one’s step. The weather here in the UK has been very Autumnal of late – which I’m loving, it’s my favourite season – and so my raincoat purchase was timely!

I just love the outdoor fire you have there in Utah – I can imagine you have plenty of cosy evenings out there! Also, Don’s dessert when you went to the restaurant in Park City – YUM!

It seems like you’re having a great time in Utah! I look forward to your Target haul, what’s a Utah trip without a Target haul, right?!
    🙂

  3. Hi Jen! I’ve been following you for about a year now and I LOVE LOVE LOVE all of your videos! I wanted to stop by to tell you that I am doing the Disney College Program this fall at Walt Disney World and if you and Don are in the area between September 2nd and January 5th I would love to meet you!!

  4. Hi Jen,
Here in Bayonne (France) the weather is a mix of sun, hot weather, storm with rain, then sun etc…. again and again. Strange summer weather.
Seeing you knitting, I decide to do cross stitch again.
I have a picture of my latest embroidery but don’t know how to share it with you.
    Thanks for inspiration.
    Enjoy your family time.
    Hug from France

  5. Hi Jen!
I have a Utah question. Is it buggy? When you take Winnie out for walks in the morning or when you are sitting outside in the afternoon, or even at night by the fire? I am not a fan of nature but Utah looks so beautiful! I might consider this kind of nature if the bug situation is not too bad 😉
Enjoy the last few weeks of summer 🙂

    1. It really doesn’t get super buggy here. Sometimes when it’s hot we have a little issue with flies outside but nothing major or that a few small fly traps can’t prevent.

  6. Aww Gracie 🙂 Time has gone by so fast – I was missing your daily vlogs over the past few days and I watched some old ones, and just last night I watched the one titled “baby watch” before she was born – I can’t believe that now she is already running around 😀 And the tiny couch is probably the cutest thing I’ve ever seen! A “Gracie for scale” (on the baby couch) photo would be really sweet 😉

Jen, what happened with the traveling bunny? Has he “retired”?

    Your videos are really sweet!

    1. He’s here! I meant to bring him on some of our outdoor adventures when my folks were here but I just plum forgot. I’ll be sure to bring him next time we do something in the mountains and he’s definitely going to be making appearances when we’re in Italy.

    1. Very cute! Someone actually made and sent me a hat just like this for Grace when she was born. Emily loved it 🙂

  7. Every single week you start off your post with “Week in Review (otherwise known as WIR)” … but you have NEVER called it your WIR. Why bother with that comment each time? Hopefully it’s just a copy and paste error because it’s senseless (otherwise known as dumb) to keep writing that.

    1. If you read my posts in general you’ll find that I do refer to it as such all of the time. I keep that tidbit in each post so it’s not confusing to newcomers. In the future I would appreciate it if you could leave constructive and respectful comments. Thank you for your input.

  8. Hi Jen! I’m moving-cross country with my family in a van, at the beginning of next week and I live in Canada, so we will be travelling to the USA and then back into Canada, and we will be with two dogs so we’ll be staying in pet-friendly hotels. One of our stops will be Chicago (The last time that was in Chicago was for a symphonic orchestra music festival during my senior year of high school in 2013 and my symphonic orchestra participated in some workshops and some performances.)… and I was wondering if you know/recommend any hotels/motels that are pet-friendly?!? This would really appreciate my mum and I as I’m helping her with the research…I would like to have a website link included in your answer, please and thank you.
Also, I will be beginning my first-ever year of post-secondary education and I’m feeling very overwhelmed! Do you have any tips, comments, suggestions, advice?!?
    Thanks for your help
    Best regards,
    Katherine M.

    1. I’m afraid I do not personally know of dog friendly hotels in Chicago since we live in the area and never need to bring Winnie with us when we stay downtown. I think most hotels state their pet policies on their websites. As for school, I recommend figuring out what method of time management works best for you. For me, this usually entails a trial and error approach working through different methods of planning and scheduling my time until I find the one that works. Good luck and safe travels 🙂

    2. Hey Katherine!
I travel with my dog all the time! In general the “La Quinta Inn” chain is the most pet friendly everywhere! I haven’t had a negative experience with one yet! Of course there are exceptions, but almost every La Quinta Inn is very pet friendly so check and see if there is one in the areas that you are stopping in 🙂

  9. Love seeing your weekend and looking forward to the target haul video. Would love to see how you do your nails in a future video. I do manicures at home and definitely not a pro at it and would love to see how others do their manicures at home.

  10. Hi Jen! I just found your blog and absolutely love it!! I wish I had your energy and organizational skills!! I can’t wait to read more about you!

  11. Hi Jen, just wanted to say thank you for your lovely video 🙂 I only just discovered your website (after watching one of your filofax videos on youtube) and I love reading all your interesting and inspirational posts. You give me so many ideas of things I want to try and explore, thank you so much for all the effort you put into everything.
Here in Australia it’s end of Winter and the weather is beautiful blue sky but still a little chilly!
Hope you are having a great week,
    Shelly

  12. Awesome weekend vlog and WIR! The food you guys have always looks delicious!! Love seeing it and your weekend!

Why was Don laying on the floor when he was talking about his golf game? Just because, or did he hurt his back? I was hoping that since you guys didn’t say anything, he is just fine and he was just laying on the floor for fun!

Ooo yes please do a nail polish application video!

Love that Eddie Bauer rain jacket on you! It’s a great fit and color! That was a great buy in the spring!!

Happy belated 5th birthday to Miss Winnie! It sounds like she had a wonderful birthday!

    1. Don has had a back problem for about a year now and he often lays on the floor to stretch. In this particular instance, however, he was on the floor playing with Winnie before I started filming 🙂
