The Container Store, Oakbrook: Store Tour & Preview Events

I was delighted to be invited to The Container Store’s Blogger Preview and Preview Party for their new Oak Brook, Illinois store last week.  As you probably already know, I am a huge fan of The Container Store (TCS for short from now on) and all of the wonderful products they offer.  It is organization heaven for someone like me who loves to have everything contained and labeled.  Take one look around my house and those feelings become even more apparent.  Most all of my bins, boxes, drawer organizers, and sorters are from TCS.  Every closet is designed with Elfa, including our storage room and garage.  I have been a loyal customer for over a decade now and my appreciation for TCS only grows. You can imagine, then, how excited I was to be given the opportunity to see the new space in Oak Brook and, best of all, take photos and film a video to share with you!

Here are some fun facts I learned during the Blogger Preview I was invited to a couple of days in advance of the store’s Grand Opening on June 28:

✻ The new 27,000 square-foot store replaces the older, smaller Oak Brook location that opened twenty years ago a few miles away.  The new store is located right in Oakbrook Center, a beautiful shopping, dining, and entertainment center.  The new TCS Oak Brook is located right next to Maggiano’s.  It is easier to access and offers ample space to house more than 10,000 products.  That’s right, 10,000!

✻ Out of those 10,000 products, TCS offers “over 300 food storage solutions, 750 organized office products, 45 types of laundry hampers, 350 organized travel products, 200 different hangers,” and more.  Talk about selection!  One of the things that makes TCS such an awesome, stand-alone retailer in my opinion is the variety and sheer volume of organizational aids and storage solutions they provide.  I have never seen another store come even close to offering the same kind of variety on such a scale.  It truly is an organizer’s paradise!

✻ TCS is well known for their awesome customer service.  If you’ve ever had the pleasure to visit one of the the retail locations, you are familiar with the friendly and helpful staff in the store.  Did you know that full-time salespersons receive over 263 hours of training in their first year?  Considering that the retail industry average is 7 – 10 hours, that kind of commitment to employee development is unique and impressive.  I can definitely see the results as a customer shopping in store by the excellent staff.

I took as many photos as I could during the Blogger Preview event to give you a sense not only of the way the store is laid out (perfectly organized and easy to navigate!) but also to show the great variety of products offered.  Photos are ordered as if walking counter clockwise through the store, ending in the center.  I did not photograph every single inch of the store (although I certainly tried!), but I think this slideshow will give you a pretty good idea of the gorgeous new Oak Brook space:

I share a closer look at the store as well as footage from the preview events in my coordinating video:

  1. The Container Store is ALWAYS fabulous but how exciting to be invited to such a special event. Their presentation of all the hors d’oeuvres was fantastic… very clever “merchandising”! I thought we might see you and Don cut a rug on that dance floor! Looks like a fun time was had by all! Thanks for sharing the experience and for your generosity!

  2. It’s so funny to hear Don say you squealed when you got a glimpse of the store, I too, squeal when I get near the store. I affectionally call it the “Mothership” and my children now to stand in silence for the first couple of minutes after entering the store. They’re 23 now, and still talk about my reaction when I’m there. Lol! Glad you enjoyed your day at TCS!

  3. Hi Jen! I hope that you have a lovely holiday weekend! I have a couple of questions for you:
    1. In the fall, on OLJ, is it possible for you to show us a “half-year mark” update on how your Erin Condren (spelling?) Life Planner has been working out for you? I, for one, would be curious to see how it has worked out for you.
    2. Should we be expecting a new travel series videos and blog posts for this summer on OLJ?
    3. I was watching your old vlogs from August of 2012, where your computer was lost at the airport… Did you ever get it back or did you have to replace it?
    4. How far is this new TCS from your house?
    5. I was watching your Summer Beauty Haul on TBBB, and you mentioned an Allure magazine article on the different body types and what clothes look best on them. I was wondering if you could tell me the title of the article and which issue it was from?
Thanks for being such an amazing inspiration for me within the last couple of years… Thanks to you, I managed to an organized, clean bedroom and workspace that I prefer, helped me to maintain an 85% average for my grade 12 last year and, finally inspired me with my own sense of fashion, too! I also wanted to thank you for all the ideas and inspiration for helping me out with my new YouTube endeavours this year.
P.S.: Beauty, your LV bag, the “Bandoulière” means ” a long piece of leather designed to wear as a shoulder strap and the capability to wear it cross-body”
P.P.P.S.: The restaurant, “Il Terrazio” when you went to Phoenix in the winter, is Italian for “The Terrace”
P.P.P.S.: You pronounce the store “L’Occitane” wrong. It’s pronounced “L’oh-ssi-ttah-neuh”

    1. I will probably post new calendar videos closer to the end of the year.
Yes, I plan on having a travel series later this summer.
I did get the computer back 🙂
This TCS is about a 45 minute drive from where I live, so it’s not the closest store to me.
I believe that article was in the May Allure but I no longer have the magazine so I am uncertain.
If you’d like to see how to pronounce L’Occitane, I recommend watching this video from them. That’s how I finally got it right!

  4. Wow – this post only makes me look even more forward to The Container Store opening in Utah in October. Finally no more shipping costs for me.
    Thanks!

  5. The mothership. There was a time when I went to TCS so often they recognized me. I was so embarrassed I stopped for a while. One of the things that I love most about them is that they keep most of the same items for years. So as your storage needs change over the years you can grow as needed. It’s something that bugs me about Target. You have to get what you want then because if you want another later in the year or next year it won’t be there. One of my favorite items is the Tellfresh tupperware style containers. I have had them for years and have added as needed. Because of their shape they store so easily. I have been buying them for over a dozen years. Some are showing some wear but I just love them and love that I can get more if needed. So many. Just so many lovelies there. I could go on and on. I know that store like the back of my hand. I have tried other storage containers, but they simply don’t last. Container Store items are pricier than things you can find at other stores which have long since been replaced. I cracked up over the beginning of the video in that plastic shoe box section. I use those for everything. Again over a dozen years using them as shoe storage. I also use them in the kitchen, bathroom. The shoes one are not as fresh looking now but they are still in good condition. Another favorite is the Tint Stacking Drawer. So cute. Happy colors. My only issue is that they are see through so when storing lots of crap, it’s not cute. I must have a dozen or more of those. Great for craft room/closet. Like other items, they have held up well. I believe both The Container Store as well as Whole Foods are Texas creations. FYI. Oh, I was just drooling over this video. Thanx so much for sharing. I am very lucky to have had one in most places I have lived. In some states they just have the happiest, nicest, friendliest people working there. They know their stuff.

  6. I love the Container Store! We have one an hour away & they just opened one up about 40 minutes away in Rhode Island…I haven’t been to that one yet but need to go check it out. How awesome & exciting to be invited to the opening, you & Don looked like you had fun! Thanks for sharing pictures & an awesome video giving us the inside scoop on the grand opening party. Thanks for sharing & giving us a chance to win a gift certificate to the store…your the best!

  7. Thank you Jen for your generous giveaway! I went to my first Container Store last week because of you! I bought organizers for my makeup table and they work great! Thank you for letting us know about this wonderful place and all of the tips that you give us. You rock 🙂

  8. On the first question what was my favorite part of TCS. I need a option to say all the above. I love everything! It was so amazing! Thank you so much for this giveaway!

  9. I get so happy when I go into my container store here in San Jose California. My husband doesn’t quite understand but he’s a really good sport so he always comes along to help me lug stuff out. I recently did my craft room and it was so much fun. I swear I like organizing the room almost as much as I do doing my paper crafting. Bottom line: I don’t know how I ever lived without the container store!!!!!

  10. I really, really wish the Container Store would open some stores in the UK. I would spend at least a day just looking at everything and probably buying most things as well!! I need containers to organise my containers – lol.

  11. Oh my word! What a place … I wish we had one of those stores in the UK. It looks like my kind of shop too! 🙂

  12. I am so jealous, I wish we had the container store in the uk. I could spend hours in there! Thanks for taking us along with you Jen, I appreciate it. That party looked amazing, the food was so cool served in all the products, such a good idea!

  13. Hey Jen,
Random question – you mentioned in an earlier video (after listing The One & Only by Emily Giffin as one of your monthly favorites) that you don’t typically read “Chick Lit.” Just curious, what kinds of books do you gravitate towards? You should totally do a book nook of some of your favorite books (perfect timing for Summer reading)!
Also, on a completely separate topic, were you able to buy anything during your Container Store visits?

    best,
    Jocelyn

    1. I’m not sure if I necessarily go for a type. I do tend to get drawn into multi-volume books and have some favorite authors. It’s really more of a hodgepodge in general though.

And no, you couldn’t purchase anything during the preview events at TCS.

  14. I’m a freshmen in college, so closet space is an issue, but I love how The Container Store makes small closet space work with great organizers.
