The Beauty Buzz: July 2014

Hi beauties and Happy August!  I’m excited to share my favorite beauty products from the past month with you.

✻ Sephora Collection Matte Blotting Films – I absolutely love using blotting papers, especially in the warmer months when my already oily-prone skin needs a little extra attention.  I’ve been using these blotting films I had on hand since I ran out of my Shiseido Pureness Oil-Control Blotting Paper I mentioned last month.  While I think I prefer the paper version in general, I find these films very effective as well.

Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder – This powder is my beauty must have in the summer to help combat my oily skin problems.  I love how lightweight and translucent it is.  It helps reduce shine and keep my makeup in place all day.

✻ MAC Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder in Nude On Board (no longer available) – It’s too bad they didn’t re-promote this awesome bronzer in this year’s summer collection like they have in previous ones.  The formula is so luxuriously soft and blendable.  This shade adds the perfect subtle glow to my already tan skin.

✻ Benefit Bella Bamba Blush (no longer available) – I can’t believe this beautiful blush is no longer available, as well!  What a bummer!  As a gorgeous peachy coral it is very similar in color to Nars Orgasm, although I prefer Benefit’s version which is a bit lighter and easier to blend.  Why must beauty brands discontinue awesome products? :/

✻ Too Face The Chocolate Bar Eye Palette – I picked this palette up earlier this year as a one-product haul because, in all honesty, it smells like chocolate.  Yes, it’s true, I fell for that gimmick.  That being said, I actually do very much enjoy the warm-toned neutrals and continue to be impressed by the Too Faced eye shadow formula.  The fact that I kind of want to eat it only makes me love it that much more!

✻ Revlon Bold Lacquer Waterproof Mascara – I received the non-waterproof version of this mascara in my July PopSugar Must Have Box.  Since I typically cannot pull off regular mascara, I decided to tuck that one away for a future giveaway and used the coupon that came with the box to purchase the waterproof version for myself.  I’ve really been enjoying this lengthening mascara, which is buildable but can be applied sparingly with a light hand, which I personally prefer.

✻ It Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Brow Pencil – I received this handy brow pencil as a gift with a big Ulta purchase I made a couple of months ago.  I use it interchangeably with my other favorite brow pencil by Sigma in Dressed Up.  The It Cosmetics version is a twist up pencil in a small oval shape with an eyebrow brush on one end.  It’s the perfect taupey-brown shade for my eyebrows.  I like to use either pencil in conjunction with my Sigma Brow Duo Powder in Medium.

✻ Tarte Amazonian Butter Lipstick in Watermelon – I love the formula of this long lasting and creamy lipstick!  The watermelon shade is a vibrant coral pink that I would typically find a bit bright for me.  I like to apply a thick lip balm, such as the Soap & Glory A Great Kisser in Juicy Peach on first, which helps to tone down the bright lipstick a bit while still retaining its beautiful color.

✻ Nyx Butter Gloss in Creme Brûlée – Yet another subscription box favorite, this lovely nude pink lipgloss was part of the June Ipsy bag.  Creme brûlée is the perfect shade to just throw on for a hint of color or to tone down a bright lipstick.  The formula is creamy without being overly thick and sticky, with nice pigmentation.

✻ Sigma 2x Spa Brush Cleaning Glove – Sigma recently gave their ever popular brush cleaning glove a makeover.  This second edition is even more innovative than the first, with two thumbs now and more defined grooves and ridges for an improved brush cleaning experience.  The improvements in this glove really do make a noticeable difference in streamlining brush cleaning!

I share more about my July beauty favorites in my coordinating video:

  1. TYFS this sweet giveaway Jen. I’ve on the fence about purchasing this palette but love the scent of the palette itself and would like to give it a try; so, winning this palette would be a sweet reward. Luv & Hugz, Cynthia

  2. I love the palette colors but I don’t know about the smelling like chocolate part. Seems a little odd. I can deal with lipstick having a fruity or sweet scent. Now I’m curious to check it out though! That’s how they get ya! 🙂

    1. The scent isn’t strong enough that you smell it once it’s applied. It’s just a gimmick, I know, but it’s the little things, you know? 🙂

  3. I definitely love when my lip products smell good! Never really tried a face/eye product that’s scented before though!

  4. I own three of the NYX butter glosses – I just love the formula of them. This summer I’ve gravitating towards the colour, Peaches & Cream a lot.

My favourite product for the month of July would definitely be the All-In-One BB Cream by The Body Shop – a perfect makeup base for the warmer months. Haven’t used another face base since purchasing!

  5. What a lovely giveaway, thank you so much! I’ve been eyeing this palette, did a test-sniff at Sephora and was pleasantly surprised at how subtle the scent is… love the colors and packaging too! I’m pretty sure I need that brush-cleaning glove in my life!

  6. I love to smell my EOS lip balms! My cat loves them too and he likes to try to lick my lips after I apply it. .. . Lol! Silly kitty. Thanks for the chance to win. I haven’t been able to buy any make up in a LONG time so a new palette would be most welcome (and the chocolate scent is a nice bonus). Have fun in Utah and can’t wait for blogs from there.

  7. Regarding my make up to have a scent … I like my lip products to have a scent …not so much my other cosmetics … that being said back in the day i must say i enjoyed all of Jessica Simpsons scented and flavoured products
thanks so much for the chance to win Jen

    1. I used to have some of her things and liked them, too. I still have the body glitter stuff altho I never use it. I don’t know why I keep it LOL 😉

  8. I like some lip flavors/scents but there are some that are just awful that ruin the fabulous color for me. I have a hard time dealing with cherry and watermelon scents… love the fresh fruit to eat but can’t stand the fake flavors and scents for some reason. I’ve never tried chocolate eyeshadows (or bronzer), so I don’t know one way or the other.

  9. I generally only like lip products that smell like a treat but I do want to try the Too Faced chocolate palette. 🙂

  10. Ah! When I first started watching the video I thought you cut you hair!!! Then I realized you didn’t… but then I started imagining it cut to your collar bone and I thought it would look so good! Might be something to consider if your ever looking for a change!

    1. Just noticed all my errors in my post… Including that your/you’re mistake that so many people get peeved about. Judgment free zone, right? 🙂 Also, I thought I’d add that I’ve been using the natural face palette lately and I don’t really like it, but I keep using it… how silly.

  11. I love the too faced chocolate bar palette! I also fell for the chocolate smell…who wouldn’t want to smell that when getting ready in the morning? I also love it for travel because it has frat neutrals for daytime looks, but some beautiful shades wih glitter and pop – I love the purple and gold for a dramatic evening look! I find that if I take this palette I have plenty of variety.

  12. I LOVE when my lip gloss smells like candy! Its even better when it tastes sweet too. I am not really a fan of when it smells good but then tastes horrible. I hope that makes sense! lol. I have all 3 of the urban decay Naked palettes, but I have never tried the Too Faced ones! Good luck to everyone!

  13. Jeen! Omg i adore you! thank u so much for your everyday kindness towards us! =)
I posted my july favorites and without even noticing it I gave you a shoutout! hahaha just in case you want to see it and laugh for a while!

    Thank u for everything! =)

  14. Thanks for the chance at the giveaway. Love your necklace! I have to say that you helped me fall in love with dainty necklaces.

Always enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing.

  15. Hi Jen I am maybe one of your younger viewers, I’m 21, but I really enjoy your style of videos and I look forward to your vlogs every week. I love your style and personality. Thank you for the giveaway I am from the Caribbean so its almost impossible to get ahold of prestige cosmetics. Hope you’re well, much love Katherina

  16. My favorite fruity make-up items are the lip glosses from Bath and Body….not an overpowering smell, not too sticky, and nice size for pocket!

  17. Great post as always. I love the look of that Benefit blush but they have such a habit of randomly discontinuing products for a while, that’s probably what’s happened to it! The packaging is so pretty too!

I really could do with a brush cleaning mit, I generally clean them against my hands but it takes so long my fingers end up looking like prunes!

    Sarah 🙂

  18. Hey Jen happy August. I have the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette and I want to buy another high end palette. I am torn between the Naked Original and the Too Faced Chocalte Bar Palette. Which one do you think complements the Basics palette? My favorite product of the month is NYC City Curls Mascara. It is great way to add length and separate your lashes. It is also only 3 dollars! Then I use a Maybelline colossal volume mascara and it looks like fake lashes and its less then 10 dollars. Hope you fun in Utah and get your beloved Ice Cream and Health Nut Cookie.

  19. I like when certain products smell sweet, such as a lip balm — but I’m not sure I’d want my eyeshadow to smell like chocolate. I envision my daughter trying to lick my eyeballs. Not cute. 😛

  20. Hi Jen!
I’ve watching your “current look” videos and I wanted to mention how useful they’ve been to me! Although I watched YT makeup ppl, for some reason your videos have been the easiest for me to follow 🙂
Will you be posting more such videos? They are really helpful!
Also, would you ever consider showing how you make your fresh twist hairstyle? I watched so many YT videos on that, but they all involve using a ton (!!!) of hairspray, an army of bobby pins, and look really really formal. When you do your hair like that it looks really nice and I would love to learn how to do it just like that 🙂

I hope that you’re having an amazing time in Utah 😀

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed them! I never thought they were that great, which is why I discontinued making them. I have received some requests to post them again and I am considering it. As for the twist, that usually is the result of what I call a “hairicle” (hair miracle). I have very fine hair and not a ton of it so I find I only need about 3 bobby pins and a bit of hairspray to secure the while thing. I usually add a decorative flower pin for a little extra something.

  21. I definitely love delicious smelling lip products and body products such as shower gel and body lotion but I can’t wear scented face make up because I breakout. That’s why as much as I want to buy and try out more Benefit products, I can’t because I had a major break out when I used their blush ons 🙁 But I really want to try this cholcolate bar eye palette!

  22. My favourite beauty products being from the UK come from Boots! Have you heard of Boots no.7? I hear Walgreens just purchased the company, so I guess if you don’t have access to no.7, you will very soon! The mascaras and blushers are absolutely fantastic! I’ve tried so many mascaras, I too have oily lids and took your advice with the waterproof formulas which is much better! I’d definitely recommend anything from Boots, I don’t think I’ve tried one bad one yet!

Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your videos! I love watching you, Don and Winnie!

Many thanks for the giggles, advice and the insight!

    Charlotte xxx

      1. It’d be great to hear what you think! Let me know if you need any specific recommendations! I’d be more than happy to help!

        C xxx

  23. Hi Jen,
I just got the prize of the too faced pallette! Thank you so much for hosting the giveaway – I already love the colours. Can’t wait to start using it tomorrow!
It is very sweet of you to host all these giveaways – you are very generous and I can’t thank you enough!
