Skincare Routine | Winter 2017

I switched up my skincare since I last shared about my routine during my pregnancy.  As much as I loved the Juice Beauty products I used at that time, my skin needed a change especially during the first few months postpartum at the beginning of last year when my hormones were all over the place.  My skin reflected that and was out of balance.  I have completely fallen in love with Drunk Elephant products.  They’re made in the US from clean, clinically-effective ingredients that are safe for pregnant and nursing women.  I’ve noticed a huge difference in my skin over the past year thanks to using them!  Here’s a look at my morning and evening skincare routines:

morning skincare routine

I cleanse my skin in the morning in the shower using the Drunk Elephant JuJu Bar.  It has an extremely mild exfoliating effect  Once I am out of the shower I follow up with my homemade toner made up of half Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar and half Heritage Store Rosewater & Glycerin (kept in a plastic bottle like this one) which I apply using my all time favorite Shiseido Facial Cotton.  While that dries I dab a bit of Drunk Elephant Shaba Complex Eye Serum under my eyes.  It is very lightweight which is perfect for daytime use under makeup but still packs a powerful moisturizing punch.

I use a couple of products designed to protect and hydrate my skin before my tinted moisturizer and makeup.  The Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum has completely transformed my face, especially concerning the fine lines on my forehead and around my mouth.  I feel like they’re far less noticeable since I’ve been using it!  Once the serum has set up, I put on the Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Gel, which acts like a primer without that silicone feel.  It keeps my skin, which has been on the drier side lately, feeling fresh and moisturized.  Lastly, I combine Juice Beauty SPF 30 Tinted Moisturizer and Juice Beauty Stem Cellular CC Cream for the perfect shade of light coverage, which evens out my complexion.

evening skincare winter 2017

The first part of my evening skincare routine is removing my makeup.  I use Lancome Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover with my favorite Shiseido Facial Cotton to gently and effectively remove waterproof eyeliner and mascara.  To remove my face makeup I dab Simple Micellar Cleansing Water onto Up & Up Exfoliating Cotton Rounds and gently sweep over my skin. I then run a washcloth under super hot water that I ring out and place over my face for a moment to help open pores and dampen my skin.  It feels very relaxing at the end of the day!  After that my skin is ready for cleansing with the Drunk Elephant Pekee Bar.  I use a Clarisonic Face Brush (mine is an older model, but this one is comparable) and a Clarisonic Luxe Facial Brush Head with this cleanser.

I gently dry my face by blotting with a clean washcloth and then apply my homemade toner.  While that dries, I gently dab Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream under each eye.  I don’t like to put my fingers into products in pots to preserve their quality, so I use a little scoop that came with a moisturizer I used years ago.  You can find a similar scoop/spatula here.  The Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum has active ingredients that help keep my pores clean and acne at bay.  Once the serum sets, it’s time to moisturize with a two-step process.  First, I use Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil, which I follow up with Drunk Elephant Lala Retro Whipped Cream.  The combination of these products keeps my skin feeling plump and soft.  Lately, I’ve experienced some dry skin on my neck and décolletage, so I’ve added a final step of applying First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration to that area, which has helped tremendously.

Check out this video if you’d like to hear more about my routine and each product I use:

I’ve been following most of this routine (with the exception of the eye cream and First Aid cream, which are newer products in the last month for me) for an entire year now with great results.  I credit the Drunk Elephant skincare products with helping me maintain much more balanced skin.  They’re definitely on the pricy side, but worth every penny in my books!

I’d love to know what your current favorite skincare products are if you care to share!

  1. Your hair looks amazing – much thicker and longer. Please share what products you’ve been using as mine is so thin.

    1. In real life it doesn’t seem much different to me, although I suppose it is a bit stronger now, which I credit mostly to pregnancy (before) and now postpartum hormone shifts. I honestly do nothing special to it. I wash it every day and air dry and that’s about it. I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful. I am well acquainted with the desire for thicker hair!

  2. Jennifer,

Thank you so much for sharing your skincare regimen — I found the information helpful especially since I had decided recently to improve my skincare regimen. Happy Birthday to your sweet CC — I’ve enjoyed seeing her pictures on your blog; she has grown so much over the past year. And yes, being a mother is absolutely the best (98% of the time!) 🙂

    Thanks again for sharing–

  3. I need to hunt down some Drunk Elephant products. Been hearing so many people talk about them who absolutely love their updated skin care routine with these.
I also love using apple cider vinegar. In fact I have been using straight up vinegar for a bunch of household things (totally off topic). I just use an old spray bottle top, screw it on a glass vinegar bottle, maybe add some essential oils… it beats any cleaning product.

    1. White vinegar is my favorite cleaning agent of choice, as well. It works wonders diluted in water on hardwood floors, in the bathroom….just about anywhere!

  4. My favourite skincare products at the moment soap and glory micellar cleansing water and soap and glory serum and soap and glory moisturising cream and also gariner moisture bomb day and night cream

  5. I love drunk elephant thanks to a post of yours from awhile ago! I’ve avoided the soaps because I was put off my the bars but I’m ordering now after hearing you rave!

How many pumps are you using of the serums? On days you wear full foundation do you still use the bb/cc cream mixture or do you just forgo a moisturizer?

And last question are Beauty all stars this year?

    Thanks for always sharing!

    1. I use 2 pumps of the day serums and just one of the glycolic nighttime one. When I wear foundation I apply it sparingly over my tinted moisturizer. They blend beautifully! I decided not to do beauty all stars this year because they’re basically the same products as last year. I might do a post on my quick everyday face which would feature all of those products, though.

      1. Thank you for answering and for helping me discover so many great new things!

I’m going to add the tinted moisturizer to my list of must tries.

  6. Thanks for sharing-I find it especially helpful when you list the order of the products! 🙂 May need to invest in some drunk elephant products! 🙂

  7. Jen, I have a question for you. You mentioned that you take the vinger in the morning. And you have not had any problems can you tell me how much you take? And if you put it in water? Thanks so much. Joanie

    1. I think I take somewhere between 1 and 2 tablespoons. I use a shot glass and fill it about halfway full. I just shoot it back straight 🙂

      1. I don’t think you’re supposed to do that with Bragg’s ACV – I think you’re really supposed to dilute it/ I take 2 teaspoons in 8 ounces of water 3X a day – that’s the dosage recommended.

  8. Thanks for sharing Jen! I use Purity Made Simple Cleanser by Philosophy, and then Josie Maran argan milk daily. I have recently added some Tula probiotic system items too. I may give Drunk Elephant a try- love the natural aspect of the product (much like Josie Maran line).

  9. Thanks so much for sharing, Jen. BTW, did you have a first birthday party for Charlotte? Happy New Year to you and your beautiful family.

  10. I started using Drunk Elephant products last year also and love, love, LOVE them! I was pregnant for most of 2015 and was very lucky to have the best skin of my life while pregnant. I literally only used a gentle cleanser and a basic gel moisturizer and basically stopped wearing makeup. It was amazing. A few months postpartum my skin rebelled and I needed a new routine, so I turned to the DE line.

I have sensitive skin and decided to start with just the cleansing bars, B-Hydra, Marula oil, and Umbra sunscreen and loved the products so much that a few months later I added in the two serums and the Lala Retro cream. Last month I finally bought the Lippe balm (amazing), and I’m looking forward to picking up the Shaba eye serum and their new facial mask this spring. I agree that these products are pricey but they are hands down the best I have ever used!

  11. Remember how you were wishing that Pacifica would come out with a brown waterproof mascara formula? I discovered this waterproofing mascara topcoat that you put over any mascara to make it waterproof. Thought of you when I saw it. I love the Marcelle brand, I use their eye make up remover but I have not tried this yet. Sounds interesting to me. Maybe you want to look into it?

  12. I would like to try drunk elephant after reading your review. Can you please send me a referral so I can get 20% off (saw it on their site). Thanks!

      1. sorry, i must be mistaken, must have been for another site. i thought it said “get $20 for yourself and 20% off for your friend” but i don’t see it anymore on their site.

  13. Hi Jen! I just wanted you to know that I truly enjoy your videos especially your reviews! This particular review made me splurge on skin items in sephora and they’re from Drunk Elephant. Spent close to $500 for my items. I’ve been using them for a week now and I’m beginning to find some improvement. By the way, I just read your background on the All About Me section of your blog and I just noticed that CC wasn’t mentioned there. Maybe it’s time to do some editing too? Anyway, please keep your blogs and vlogs coming! I truly enjoy every minute of it!
