It’s pregnancy update time! In my weekly update I share what’s happening in my pregnancy journey with you. This includes general stats such as how I’m feeling, any symptoms I’m experiencing, food cravings and aversions, weight gain, bump shots, etc., as well as what’s going on in my life that’s pregnancy-related and any baby things we’ve purchased or received as gifts. Here’s the scoop at 21 weeks:
Look at that bump! It’s certainly taking more of a distinct shape this week. I feel like there’s no doubt I look pregnant to an outside observer now. Yay!
Here’s the current status:
❊ How Far Along – 21 weeks
❊ Baby Size Comparison – Banana (7″ Head to Rump / 10.5″ Head to Toe and 11 ounces)
❊ Symptoms – The itchy skin has begun, unfortunately. My skin has been drier than normal since I conceived so I’ve been diligent about my twice daily moisturizing routine. In the last week, however, it’s started to get a bit itchy, particularly on my breasts. I’ve heard it’s best to avoid scratching, which can increase the chances of stretch marks and generally isn’t good for your skin, so I’m doing my best not to. Lotions and oils help a lot (more on this in a moment). I’ve also been experiencing instances of pressure several times a day in my lower abdomen. It’s not painful or even particularly uncomfortable, but definitely noticeable. I’m not sure if this is related to my uterus growing, the baby moving, or possibly Braxton Hicks, which I read can start around week 20. I plan to ask my doctor when I see her this week.
❊ Physical Changes – My bump is really taking more of a distinct pregnant belly shape now, which I am absolutely loving. I find myself drawn to holding it a lot more, especially when I am sitting for a long time or when I get up from sitting. It’s like I’m holding my little girl.
❊ Weight Gain – 0 pounds (12 total) – I’m not worried about not gaining this week since I gained 2 pounds last week.
❊ Mood – I’ve been feeling very happy and calm for the most part, but I did have a bit of an emotionally volatile weekend where I felt up and down a lot. So far this week I’m back to feeling more stable. Hormones are fun! 😉
❊ Sleep – 8 hours is pure heaven! I still get up just 1-2x a night to use the bathroom, but I never have an issue with going right back to sleep.
❊ Food Cravings – I still look forward to a big glass of milk every night after dinner. Just thinking about it now makes me want one! I’ve also returned to my first trimester craving of caesar salad. I think I had this for dinner with chicken almost every night last week.
❊ Food Aversions – Fish and raw meat, still, although I feel like my intense disgust for both is waning. I actually had to work with some raw meat over the weekend to help my husband get it into the marinade for a party we had Saturday night. I put on some long kitchen gloves, held my nose, and was able to do it without feeling sick. That’s definite progress!
❊ Missing – I was missing my home in Illinois a bit at the end of last week as our month long stay in Utah drew to a close, but now I’m back. As much as I love the Utah house and consider it home, there’s really no place like home.
❊ Looking Forward To – More movement and having Don feel the baby kick.
❊ This Week’s Happenings – Last week I expressed my joy at finally being able to feel the baby move. While I did feel her at least once every day since then, it was very faint, like a light tapping, and I sometimes doubted what it was. I wished I could feel her more distinctly and with some regularity. Right after I filmed this week’s video update, that wish was granted! After I sat down to edit, Baby Girl kicked for almost an hour and in the most noticeable way yet. Huzzah! Later that night as I was lying in bed about to fall asleep, she started up again and this time I could actually feel it with my hand on the outside of my belly. I tried to have Don feel it, too, but he was mostly asleep and she stopped the second I put his hand on my belly. I have a feeling I’ll be able to have him feel her very soon, though. She’s been kicking with more regularity in the last couple of days and it makes me deliriously happy every time.

I thought I’d share about the products I’ve been using to help with my dry and stretching skin over the course of the pregnancy so far:
❊ Pacifica Body Butter – I’ve used and loved Pacifica’s body butter since well before I conceived. It’s thick and takes a bit of effort to rub in, but it sinks into the skin nicely without leaving a greasy residue. I used this in my first trimester all over my body. Now that I’m in my second trimester, I use more concentrated products on my midsection, but still use the Pacifica on my legs, arms, and upper back after my morning shower.
❊ Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter – I purchased this Mommy-To-Be favorite at the beginning of my second trimester to use specifically on my belly, breasts, upper thighs, lower back, and tush after my morning shower. I really like it. It absorbs evenly into the skin without leaving a greasy residue, which is ideal for early in the day before I get dressed. My skin absolutely drinks it up, especially on my growing belly!
❊ The Honest Co. Organic Body Oil – I started using a body oil at night before bed early on in my first trimester to help with my drier skin. I used this organic blend all over my body for the first few months. Once I flipped into my second trimester, I started using richer oils on my midsection, but I still used The Honest Co. oil on my extremities up until this past week.
❊ Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Nourishing Body Oil – I bought this oil at the same time as the Belly Butter and started using it on my midsection at night before bed in place of The Honest Co. oil. It has a very distinct lemon scent, which I actually like, but can imagine might be irritating to some. In the past month I have switched to using an even richer oil on my midsection. I just recently started using the Burt’s Bees oil on my extremities as my skin gets drier.
❊ Mother’s Special Blend All Natural Skin Toning Oil – I’ve only been using this oil for the past month, but I really like it so far. It is a rich, dense oil that really packs a punch! I apply this right before bed on my midsection. It does leave a noticeable residue on the skin, which is why I prefer to use this and any oil product at night. It doesn’t get on my sheets since I apply it to areas that are covered by the nighties I sleep in.
I plan on sharing a dedicated post on my favorite pregnancy products later on in my pregnancy if you’re interested in hearing more about my top picks.
I talk more about my week in this video if you’re interested:
Please let me know if there are any other stats you’d like me to add to the list. I’m happy to share!
