Pregnancy Update | 18 Weeks

It’s pregnancy update time!  In my weekly update I share what’s happening in my pregnancy journey with you.  This includes general stats such as how I’m feeling, any symptoms I’m experiencing, food cravings and aversions, weight gain, bump shots, etc., as well as what’s going on in my life that’s pregnancy-related and any baby things we’ve purchased or received as gifts.  Here’s the scoop at 18 weeks:

bump update 18 weeks

Check out that bump progress!  I am super excited about my growing belly.  It’s nice to finally look legit pregnant and not just bloated (to the outside observer at least).  You might notice the different background in this week’s photo.  We’re out at the family house in Utah for the remainder of the month.

Here’s the current status:

❊ How Far Along – 18 weeks

Baby Size Comparison – Sweet Potato (5.5″ and 5-7 ounces)

Symptoms – I’ve been pleasantly surprised that I haven’t experienced any increased effects of the altitude since we arrived in Utah late last week.  I had a bit of a headache for the first full day we were here and was a little gassy for a few days, but these are things I usually experience when adjusting to the altitude (6,000 feet at the house), pregnant or not.  It’s all about upping my water intake and after a few days I usually feel just fine, which is the case this time around as well.

❊ Physical Changes – Bump popped out in a noticeable way this past week and I’m loving it!

Weight Gain – 1 pound (9 total)

❊ Mood – Happy as a clam!  It’s been a super busy week between getting out to Utah and having my parents come visit, but all good things!

Sleep – Sleeping a bit less this week, maybe more like 7 hours a night on average, which I can tell isn’t quite enough, but there’s too much fun stuff going on!

Food Cravings – Honestly, I don’t think I’ve been eating enough this past week.  It’s been a go-go-go kind of week and I haven’t had much time to think about food, so I haven’t really been craving anything.  I’m working on eating a healthier amount at regular intervals next week.

Food Aversions – Fish has taken on a whole new level of ick for me.  I can’t even be in the same room as it!  I feel like my sense of smell intensified this week, which doesn’t help.

Missing – Getting 8 or more hours of sleep, but I’m hoping to remedy that soon.  I know I need to relish it while I can!

Looking Forward To – Still waiting on feeling baby move.  Waiting and waiting and waiting.  It feels like time is moving so slowly.  I’ve heard that things really pick up after the halfway mark.  So far it feels like time is moving in slow motion, but I’ve been able to get a lot done, so that’s the silver lining.

❊ This Week’s Happenings – I’m starting to really feel connected to the baby.  Of course I’ve been over the moon excited about her ever since I found out I was pregnant, but I think my first trimester anxiety and little blips of uncertainty early on in my second trimester made it difficult for me to really feel that connection.  I’ve been so much more confident and relaxed for the past couple of weeks ever since I elected for a 16 week ultrasound.  That sense of calm combined with my growing bump has allowed me to develop a deep bond with my baby.  I feel so connected and in love with her.  It’s an incredible experience and I look forward to feeling even more as time goes on.

I talk more about my week in this video if you’re interested:

Please let me know if there are any other stats you’d like me to add to the list.  I’m happy to share!
Thank you so much for your well wishes, kind words, and helpful advice.  I appreciate your support so much!

  1. I love these weekly videos. I was wondering if Don has gained any weight ? I know some husbands do and some don’t. Mine never did. He stayed stick thin. lol Your belly bump is so cute ! Thanks for sharing your weekly photos.

  2. Hi Jen when my daughter was pregnant and when she didn’t feel him kicking much ,she went on EBay and bought a Doppler that let her listen to the baby’s heartbeat. It was not very expensive and it worked great and the piece of mind it gave her was priceless. I just wanted to let you no about this.

  3. Pretty Miss is showing her presence she’s popping your tummy and widening you smile each week. I am Loving these updates Jen, thank you for sharing🍼

  4. Hi Jen! I didn’t feel the movements with my first baby so my step mom suggested that I should sit on the edge of my bed, lay back (like you would to fasten too tight jeans), and be very still. I could feel her that way!! 🙂 it’s such a blessing.. Maybe it might work for you?

  5. 6. I remember the first feelings of my baby moving were so faint that it was hard to identify. I didn’t realize what it was until I was having a facial one day and I was super relaxed and not thinking about it.

    Cute bump! 🙂

  7. Hi Jen, love seeng your updates and that you are sharing your journey. You are absolutely glowing, more so as your pregnancy progresses. Wishing you all the very best. From Australia. Xx

  8. Hi Jen! My sincerest congratulations to you and your families throughout this exciting time… My oldest cousin, William, and his wife, Clémence, is expecting his first baby, also at some point next year…Anyhow, I need some of your help and advice, on all things weddings and fashion-related: Later this summer, I will be a cross-country roadtrip to visit my dad’s family and we will be going to TWO of my cousins’ engagement parties & family reunions…I am required to wear a pretty (URGH!) semi-casual dress and I need some advice on which colour and/or style would be nice. My price point for that type of dress will range from 50.00$ to 100.00$. Both of my cousins have said that there isn’t a colour scheme or something specific that I need to get, thank goodness. Also, do you or any readers out there, have any advice on how to feel comfortable in your skin when wearing a dress? Despite my great posture, I ALWAYS end up feeling super-awkward and feeling like I’m going to vomit whenever I wear a dress, mainly because I always get mocked upon by my large number of male cousins, both the older and younger ones; hence why I mostly feel comfortable wearing dress pants instead…Is it normal to feel ugly and awkward when wearing dresses? Has that ever happened to you, before? How do you cope with it? I have never been able to handle teasing and mockery very well, and it always made me feel like worse and makes my self-esteem and self-confidence worse…
Thanks so much for all of your help and advice. I really appreciate it!

    1. When it comes events like that I try to find something that I feel comfortable in that fits the dress code. If you’re really uncomfortable in a dress, perhaps you could ask if it would be alright to wear nice slacks and a dressy top. Ultimately you want to be able to enjoy yourself at these special events and wearing something that makes you uncomfortable can get in the way of that.

  9. Kristina W’s blog is where I first “met” you. I love making cards and have followed her for a very long time. It’s wonderful to listen to your updates and hear your joy and enthusiasm. I am so happy for you and Don.

  10. Jen,

Your bump is definitely bigger, even in the loose dress you are wearing in your video. You are so cute. And Winnie is adorable, as always. I vote for a ‘lavender’ nursery and the unicorn theme. 💜😊

  11. Your little baby girl is a gift from God to bring you happiness, to make you feel complete in life. You, Don, baby girl and Winnie… happy blessed family.

  12. Prayer of an Expectant Mother

Lord Jesus, I lovingly pray for this sweet hope that I keep within my womb.
You have granted me the immense gift of a tiny little life, living in my own life, and I humbly thank you for choosing me as an instrument of your love.
In this sweet waiting, help me to live in a constant attitude of self-surrender to your will.

Grant me a motherly heart that is pure, steadfast and generous.
    I hand over to you my own concerns;
any anxious fears that may come, my own wishes for the little person that I still have no knowledge of.
Grant that it may be born healthy in body,
keep far from it every peril to its soul.

Mary, you have known the ineffable joy of a holy motherhood; give me a heart that can transmit an ardent, living faith.
Sanctify my waiting, bless this joyful hope that is in me, grant that the fruit of my womb may open out in virtue and in holiness through your working with that of your divine Son.

    Amen.

  13. One of my favorite Youtubers painted her baby girl’s nursery a soft grey with purple and white decal accents. It looks really lovely with her white furniture! Perhaps a warm grey tone would go well with your floors? You can catch a glimpse of the nursery in her video here: https://youtu.be/K7DFI_-MkRo

  14. My sense of smell was my first tip to the fact that I was pregnant and before my test! We were at at friend’s house for supper and they were cooking salmon. Fish was the WORST for me too!

  15. I’ve followed you for about 2 years. I love your way of organizing and will go to your site if I’m stuck on how to organize something. I just wanted to say you look happy and beautiful in your pregnancy pictures. Congrats to you and your husband. Can’t wait to see the new addition to your family.

  16. You really have popped! Love it! 2nd trimester is the best. You’re usually no longer sick, but you’re also not huge and ungainly. You can actually enjoy being pregnant. At least that’s how I felt.
Also, when I was pregnant and couldn’t feel my sweet girl moving, I would lay in my bed with the lights out, quiet my breathing, and really try to internalize my focus. It allowed me to feel her fluttering around. Gave me peace of mind.
Hope this helps. Love your updates!

  17. Jenn, You are glowing. You look deeply content and happy. So so so happy for you and your family!! Stay well and feeling good. All my best, Robyn

  18. It’s good knowing the altitude as a Mommy-To-Be. My OB/GYN said anything within 6000 feet was fine but to be cautious (exertion-wise) in altitudes exceeding that range. So just thought I’d pass that along 🙂 In regards to the Doppler (as someone suggested) I think a “safer” option would be a Fetoscope. Love seeing your glow. Enjoy these moments 🙂

  19. It’s so nice to hear that you really feel bonded with baby now. That will only intensify as you start to feel her move and grow. I remember loving being pregnant and being the first person to really get to know my baby. I also really loved how much more in love my husband and I felt with each other. I was so proud to be carrying his child and he was so sweet to me. I wish I had savored that wondrous time more. Dreaming of the future, holding our hands on my belly, being so grateful for one another. Maybe in your next update you can talk about how the pregnancy has affected your marriage thus far!

  20. Hey Jen just wanted to say I have been watching u since before Gracie was born. I just love u and Don and Winnie.
    Previous people.
I have 4 kids married 19 yrs iam 35. 2 boys 2 girls. Life is preciousness with kids and this last video I can see the emotion in your eyes from happiness from this little baby girl God has given you. Worrying and anxiety is bad for u and baby so I am glad u r over that. Peace and relax. You r gonna be the best mom. And take each little breath of a moment from thus day forward. Trust me they grow fast 18,16,11,9 r my kids ages now.
You will then have time to worry and anxiety lol.
Keep staying strong u r doing great. Faith and hope.
    Serenity.
    All good girl names too.

  21. Jen totally enjoy the pregnancy period, I’m quite different from many that I absolutely LOVED my pregnancy period. Unfortunately my son came at 29 weeks so 10 weeks before his due date so I didn’t get to enjoy it right till the end, but he’s happy, healthy and well and that’s all I can really ask for.

Have you got a Pregnancy Diary? I got the one that had both in it for $35 and I love it, it’s called Bump to Birthday, it’s hard cover and it’s quite detailed. Great keepsake 😀

  22. My vote for the nursery would be the neutral shades, with lavender! Lavender has so many colors that it pairs with, that you could do even some light grey shades and it would look stunning! Very classy looking, without being overly “baby” It would be something that you could keep into her whole childhood, and would match anything she will end up loving. Trust me, you will go through so many different room decors by the time she is school age, you will be glad you went with a neutral shade with a pop of color. My 7 year old has had care bears, which was her nursery color with pink, then Dora was her favorite at 2, and the room didnt match anything she wanted. We had to repaint it. Then Tinkerbell, so we painted it yet again purple, then Disney Princesses, but we left it purple, and now its all about Frozen, and we just painted it light blue, and its staying light blue until she moves out! So, thats my mommy advice, to go with a light, neutral shade, with the lavender or shade of purple as accents, and you can always buy decor in that color since its so much easier to replace. Also, im a tad biased, but you should name her Melissa 🙂 I am so happy for you, and I love seeing these updates every week! My question, have you looked into getting belly casting done, and maternity photos? If not, do it! I wish I would have

    1. TFS your advice! As for belly casting – no, but I did recently book a maternity shoot for me and Don in November that we’re also probably going to use for our family holiday cards this year.

  23. Oh yes, the super human sense of smell. It might not go away. My baby is 5 and I still drive my husband nuts with how I can smell everything. Ha! Your bump is definitely getting bigger! You look so cute!!
I just wanted to share a link with you…I saw this nursery the other day as me and my niece were looking at different nursery themes. It’s so precious and reminded me a lot of what you described!

Take care, Jen! Have a great week!
