Pregnancy Update | 17 Weeks

It’s pregnancy update time!  In my weekly update I share what’s happening in my pregnancy journey with you.  This includes general stats such as how I’m feeling, any symptoms I’m experiencing, food cravings and aversions, weight gain, bump shots, etc., as well as what’s going on in my life that’s pregnancy-related and any baby things we’ve purchased or received as gifts.  Here’s the scoop at 17 weeks:

bump update 17 weeks

My bump doesn’t look much different in the photo than it did last week, but it feels like a pretty big difference to me.  I spoke last week about feeling like my bump hadn’t really grown, but it popped out the day I took my photo and it’s been pretty much the same since.  I’m loving it!

Here’s the current status:

❊ How Far Along – 17 weeks

Baby Size Comparison – Turnip (5.5″ and 5 ounces)

Symptoms – Still thirsty.  I asked my doctor about it and she said it’s not a concern and perfectly normal.  Baby’s thirsty!

❊ Physical Changes – Bump is really taking a bump-like shape now!  I love it 🙂

Weight Gain – 1 pound (8 total)

❊ Mood – Happy and relatively calm.  That ultrasound last week was the best decision ever!

Sleep – Same as before: 8+ hours a night with 1-2 interruptions to pee.  Absolutely loving my new Snoogle!

Food Cravings – Fruit, fruit, and more fruit, particularly apples.  Yum!

Food Aversions – Fish and I are still not getting along.  Not one bit!

Missing – I honestly can’t think of anything this week.  I’m in happy pregnancy land right now and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.

Looking Forward To – Feeling the baby move.  My doctor confirmed that it looks like I have an anterior placenta from my ultrasound pictures last week, which some of you pointed out.  This means the placenta is attached to the front wall of my uterus instead of behind the baby, which is apparently very common and not a cause for concern at this point.  It also means it might take longer for me to feel baby’s movements since there’s that barrier in between.  She said she wouldn’t expect me to feel anything until somewhere between 21 and 24 weeks.  That’s a long time from now and it’s hard to be patient, but I feel better knowing the reasons behind the wait.

❊ This Week’s Happenings – I bought a Snoogle and am absolutely obsessed with it.  This curved body pillow can be used in several ways depending on your particular needs.  I’m enjoying using it for back support right now as I sleep on my side.  It keeps me snugly and comfortable locked in place so I don’t roll onto my back, which I started doing out of the blue about a month ago after a lifetime of being solely a side sleeper.  I’m in love! ❤︎

I talk more about my week in this video if you’re interested:

Please let me know if there are any other stats you’d like me to add to the list.  I’m happy to share!
Thank you so much for your well wishes, kind words, and helpful advice.  I appreciate your support so much!

  1. Cute video! LOVE the gifts you got! That dress and bloomers from Vera Bradley is adorable!!! Can’t wait to see baby in it. Have an awesome time in Utah! I love the Salt Lake City area and all it has to offer…especially the mountains!
    See you in Utah!!!

  2. I am also pregnant and have an anterior placenta. I was SO anxious to feel movement and it felt like it took forever! I was at least 24 weeks before feeling moving regularly. Before that it would be occasional. But once that wait was over, I don’t feel like I missed out very much 🙂 I see and feel movement all of the time and its wonderful. I’m due in just 5 weeks!

  3. Hi Jen, you look lovely – pregnancy really suits you 🙂 It took me ages to feel front facing kicks, BUT….. What I found is that if I was sitting on the couch or floor cross legged, sitting quite upright, I definitely felt little bounces on my bladder from about 17 weeks or so. They got stronger over the next month or so, and then I started feeling proper kicks.

    1. Bladder bounces! Oh boy, my bladder’s already going through the ringer 😉 J/K, I’ll take anything and everything in the movement department!

  4. Good luck with fish. Smh 32 weeks now and STILL can’t do it! Your bump is looking wonderful! Here is a question for next time, have you noticed any change in the size of your feet? Mine aren’t too much bigger this time but with my daughter 7 years ago I went up a whole size!

    1. Not yet but I already know not to buy new shoes until after baby is born if I can help it just in case 🙂

  5. Hi Jen, I am busily catching up on missed posts as I have been away on my very first camping trip. I wanted to share that I used your organizational tip of adhering a list to the outside of our camping storage container itemizing supplies we need to shop for the next time we camp. Looking forward to future organizational posts. Now back to catching up….

  6. Please don’t stop the thirty minute videos or apologize for them! – We love them, it is very clear that you love making them as well, so we don’t mind if they are a little longer! I look forward to your update videos every Wednesday.

    You are defiantly glowing now!

Are you going to try any natural remedies/helps during child birth, such as hyponotherapy, birthing pool etc?

  7. Congratulations Jen! I cant tell you how happy I am for you! I struggle with infertility myself, but we do have 1 precious daughter, who is 7 now! I always thought you maybe struggled yourself, and so to see that your expecting is so great! I cant imagine better parents then you and Don! That will be one spoiled little girl, and I am sure Don will be wrapped around her finger. I wish you the best of everything and all the happiness in the world! My question for you is, do you have a name picked out, and will you be sharing the name with your subscribers or do we have to wait?

    1. Just type in your email address in the little box to the right and click subscribe for updates in your inbox 🙂

  8. You are absolutely glowing Jen. I’m just so happy for you and Don, there won’t be more loving parents then you will be. It’s such a treat to share in your journey! Just can’t wait to share in the nursery design. Congratulations to you and yours, such a beautiful time for you 👶🚼🐹

  9. your updates are so stinking cute. I only had my husband in the delivery room too. You look great, you have that beautiful glow. Have a good time in Utah.

  10. It’s great you are craving apples. I think I would be the one that craves cheesecakes and ice cream. Take care, and remember to play Mozart to your baby.

  11. I couldn’t feel my daughter until I was around 20 weeks. Even then I wasn’t sure because the movements were so small and hard to notice. I wasn’t sure if it was gas or the baby. lol I think it was around 30 weeks when I really noticed feel an elbow or even feel hiccups.
The only family I had in the delivery room was my husband. It was the best choice for us. It was peaceful and amazing. Don’t get me wrong I love my family but I’m happy with my choice.
Question: Have you thought about what your first trip with your baby girl will be?

  12. I loved my snoogle too – and pro tip! It’s great for breastfeeding if you’re going to do that. Supports your back, your elbows, the baby, and a book or ipad in your other hand to keep you occupied!

    1. I was thinking that too after looking at all the ways you can use it on the sheet it came with. Thanks for the tip!

  13. I love seeing the bump pictures ! Everyone is right, you’ve got that ‘glow’ ! Your hair is getting long. It’s very pretty. Thanks for sharing Jen. Have a wonderful relaxing time in Utah. I hope we get to see some of Don’s grilling/smoking expertise !

  14. I had a friend tell me that her doctor said if she woke up on her back it was fine. It was your body waking you up to remind you to roll back to your side. Nothing to be worried about at all waking up on your back. 🙂 Glad you are doing so well.

  15. I am so excited for the both of you! What a special, sacred time in your life. I love to see someone so happy about their pregnancy! Can’t wait for the next update!

  16. I’ve been watching you for years Jen and have to say that this pregnancy is making you even more beautiful then you already were! I am so grateful that you are sharing this experience with us. It feels like a longtime friend is sharing the great news and I couldn’t be happier. Congrats to both of you!

  17. I know you’ve shared with us you love tea! I had a question- does this affect any of your tastes in tea? You’ve spoken on how you aren’t a big fan of black tea… But have your tastes changed- eg. finding a tea you didn’t like so much you like now, you didn’t like a tea but like it now, or just a shift in tastes? Just a question! 🙂

    1. I actually haven’t been interested in tea at all for the entire pregnancy up until today when I went to my favorite local coffee shop in Utah and got a rooibos latte with almond milk, honey, and cinnamon. Yum! That’s more of a treat, though. We’ll see if my taste for tea in general returns in the cooler weather.

  18. Congrats on your pregnancy Jen! You’re looking fantastic! I was curious, regarding your recent clothing haul, have you ever considered trying a service like Stitch Fix for maternity (or non-maternity) clothing?

  19. Such a pretty dress and actually very versatile. If you add a white long sleeve onesie and leggings or jeans under the dress you can wear it during colder seasons!

Blessings to you and your family!
