Pregnancy Update | 16 Weeks

It’s pregnancy update time!  In my weekly update I share what’s happening in my pregnancy journey with you.  This includes general stats such as how I’m feeling, any symptoms I’m experiencing, food cravings and aversions, weight gain, bump shots, etc., as well as what’s going on in my life that’s pregnancy-related and any baby things we’ve purchased or received as gifts.  Here’s the scoop at 16 weeks:

pregnancy update 16 weeks bump

It’s funny how I barely noticed any changes in my bump over the course of the last week, and then today when I was getting dressed in my “bump outfit” to take my photo it suddenly seemed to have grown!  It’s definitely a bit rounder than last week.  I thought I’d continue to include my 8 week shot in the mix for a good “before” (albeit first trimester bloated) comparison shot.

Here’s the current status:

❊ How Far Along – 16 weeks

Baby Size Comparison – Avocado (5″ and 3-5 ounces)

Symptoms – Still pretty thirsty, but consistent water consumption helps a lot.  Also, experiencing some mild headaches that I’ll ask my doctor about next week at my monthly appointment.

❊ Physical Changes – Bump finally grew a bit after a week of no change, just in time for my bump shot today!  My hair is growing, too.  Trying to decide what to do about cutting it or not.

Weight Gain – 1 pound (7 total)

❊ Mood – Happy in general with anxiety flare-ups late last week.  Wishing I could feel some flutters so I know Baby Girl’s alright in there!

Sleep – Same as before: 8+ hours a night with 1-2 interruptions to pee.  Sleeping like a rock and enjoying it while I can!

Food Cravings – Fruit still!  Specifically, watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon.  So refreshing!

Food Aversions – Still fish.  I tried to eat a salmon caesar salad earlier this week and it was kind of hard to get through, so I’m thinking it’s just best to avoid it altogether.

Missing – Seeing my baby.  My last ultrasound was at 10 weeks!  But I finally did something about that this weekend 🙂

Looking Forward To – Feeling the baby move.  I can hardly wait!

❊ This Week’s Happenings – Worked myself into a full out tizzy (see video for a more in-depth explanation) feeling uncertain, so I decided to go have an elective ultrasound at GoldenView in Chicago and it was so, so worth it!  Not only did I get to see Baby Girl and take home pictures of her, I was also able to purchase a recording of her heartbeat stuffed inside of a unicorn plush.  I squeeze it about a hundred time a day and it makes me feel all warm & fuzzy inside.  You can see some of our latest ultrasound pics below:

ultrasound 16 weeks 2015

I included a variety so you could get a sense of how she’s changed in the last 6 weeks.  She has much more prominent facial features and the details of her rib cage and arm and leg bones really stand out.  Also, we got visual confirmation that she is, indeed, a girl

I talk more about my week in this video if you’re interested:

Please let me know if there are any other stats you’d like me to add to the list.  I’m happy to share!
Thank you so much for your well wishes, kind words, and helpful advice.  I appreciate your support so much!

  1. It’s so nice to follow the development. Enjoy this time! I’m already excited about the name! 😉

    Greetings from Vienna!

  2. Very cute pics. Common not to feel the flutter until 18 was sometimes a bit later even. Especially if placenta is laying at the front of your abdomen. Did you know you can purchase dopplers that you can listen to the heartbeat at home? I rented one with my pregnancies (just for fun). Pretty neat keepsake you got with the heartbeat! 🙂

  3. Congratulations Jen & Don! I’m a sonographer and as I looked at your ultrasound photos I noticed you have an anterior placenta which can act as a buffer between baby and you. This can make it take a little bit longer for you to feel baby girl’s kicks and flips. Thought maybe this info would help ease your mind as you anticipate those first flutters which are truly magical. 🙂

      1. Hi Jen! I too had an anterior placenta with my second pregnancy and it took me until I was around 24 weeks to feel my son move! Congratulations to you and Don, I can already see you are going to be amazing parents! X

      2. I also had an anterior placenta with my baby who is almost one now. It doesn’t hurt anything at all, but it can make it take longer for you to feel the baby move. I first started feeling the baby just before 20 weeks, but it was pretty faint at first. It took even longer for the movements to feel more prominent and for other people to be able to feel/see them. And I was also super excited to feel the baby move. I think it was the thing I loved the most about pregnancy.

  4. Jen,
I just watched your 16 week update video and I could really relate to the anxiety that you were feeling. I wanted you to know that they sale dopplers for home use that are very nice quality. The prices can range but I believe that the most expensive are around $200-300. It helped me so much to be able to listen to my little ones on demand. Just an idea because the stress is not great for you or dear daughter(DD). Do whatever you need to for your peace of mind. Congratulations again!

    1. I did hear about those but ultimately decided not to get one after talking to my doctor about it. I know other people who’ve used them with great success, though!

  5. Girl, pictures don’t lie. That baby bump is getting bigger ! lol You are so cute ! And woman to woman. Your body is showing signs it’s getting ready to feed that baby too. Thanks Jen for sharing all that you do. Hugs, from your Kansas friends.

  6. So enjoyed this video. You look great and I’m glad you put your mind at ease by getting the additional sonogram done. I hope you have a restful time in Utah and I’m looking forward to pics of the nursery out there! xoxo

  7. Hi Jen!!! I sent you a gift last week and I misplaced the tracking slip 😢 I was wondering if you recived it. I was in such a hurry I didn’t get to write a real note so I just wrote on the gift bag tag. It was a swaddling blanket with bumble bees on it.😊 I’m so happy for you!!!! Try and enjoy your pregnancy your little one will be so worth the wait. P.s thank you for sharing I so enjoy your videos😘

    1. If you watch the video you’ll see that I did 🙂 I sent you a note you should receive in a few days. Thank you for thinking of us!

  8. Aw, she’s such a little cutie!! I can’t wait to see if she takes more after you or Don. You are due the same time as my sister in law as well as another good friend. I frequently pray for the 3 of you and your sweet little ones. Keep the updates coming!

  9. Don’t worry about not seeing or feeling much change these next few weeks. I didn’t get a bump until week 21 and couldn’t feel the baby until week 22. Everybody’s different but it seems pretty normal not to feel too much at this point.

  10. You look awesome Jen 😀 Can’t wait for baby girl to come and I am sincerely happy for you and Don , sending best wishes and love from Egypt ❤️

  11. loving the updates! can’t wait to go home and watch the video!

i say keep the hair! i almost chopped mine off too, but decided to keep the length. it’s so much easier for me. shorter hair takes more styling effort for me. lol.

  12. I remember that same feeling of anxiety! I didn’t feel my baby move until around 18 or 19 weeks. Once you start feeling the baby move you will feel better…right now you just don’t feel anything so it’s so scary! Try to just relax…I remember how hard it was!

  13. i love your videos Jen, u & Don are 2 fun!! i can see a difference in your photos. u look all glowy & happy. i hope your stress & anxiety becomes more calm or simply(er). like you said in the video you have to remember you are totally different & we can not compare ourselves to others. but we are only human so we all do it at times in our lives. keep the faith & love all moments or your change in your pregnancy. i will pray for your family. take care. big big hugs. please do keep sharing as much as you feel comfortable in doing. we all love it!! ( :

  14. Jen! Jen! Jen!! I am so happy for you and Don!! 🙂 I have one question…have you thought about or looked into the 3d ultrasound? Do you think you guys will get one?!? Wishing you all the best! Happy 16 weeks!!

    1. I did look into it and honestly we’re just not interested in having one at this time. Maybe that will change later on, but I’m happy with the regular 2D ultrasounds I’ve had before.

  15. Congrats Jen! Awwww..I totally understand your anxiety. I think every pregnant woman goes with the territory (from now until forever..the blessing and curse of being a mommy!) I had a “normal” pregnancy 1st (other than hella morning sickness for 9mos). Then with my 2nd, I too had bleeding and spotting for months. In my case, I lost one of a twin early on (which I know isn’t your situation) but my point in sharing this, is that I learned how difficult it is to allow ourselves to truly let go, and trust all is well when it’s been a rocky start. I worried my entire pregnancy that something was going to happen with the remaining twin, and honestly, could not bring myselft to bond fully with baby #2 like I did with #1. I felt guilty, anxious..all that stuff because I wanted to bond, but was just toooo scared to for fear of something happening. Not only did I experience the anxiety about taking this baby to term, but ESPECIALLY about “what if I don’t bond with this baby when he’s born.. Or worse, “what if I don’t love this baby as much as my first” esp since I felt so bonded during pregnancy. It’s so hard to begin shopping, decorating etc when you feel anxious about things..but like everything else..just take it a day at a time. Remember that this anxiety you have isn’t just during pregnancy..literally it’s from now you are doing great to recognize when you begin feeling OVER anxious (cause EVERY woman is anxious to some extent!) and do positive things to help yourself feel more comfortable at the time. Everyone is different and needs more/less reassurance during stressful times. Even extremely happy things can be stressful! Sounds like you are doing great..taking great care of yourself..and that’s the very best thing you can do for you little girl..whether she is in your womb or in your arms. You will be just fine, and I look forward to all of your updates! (Isn’t it amazing how different it is when it’s YOU that’s pregnant vs friends or family?)

  16. I was pleasantly surprised to hear how reasonably priced these ultrasounds are. I’ve never seen a heartbeat recording stuftie before and I think that’s an incredible value, not to mention priceless! Your baby’s heartbeat will always be music to your ears. My youngest is almost thirty and I still smile when I hear a baby’s heartbeat. Best wishes for continued health and happiness. Moms always worry about their kids. To quote Michael McLean, You’re Not Alone! Welcome to the wonderful world of motherhood💝

    1. I thought it was reasonable as well, not knowing how much these things would cost before looking into it. GoldenView was definitely the most reasonable out of the local places I looked up and also the most well reviewed.

  17. I am thinking your bump has grown in the last week! I KNOW how hard it is to wait for the flutter of your child. My second one took a very long time to announce that he was there but once he did he NEVER let me forget he was there! I didn’t know he was a boy (ultra sounds were very limited 28 years ago) but the way he acted in the womb I had guessed it!!!! I love your updates! Thanks for sharing!

  18. Aww Jen!!

I wish I could give you a hug girl, I am listening to your video while typing this comment.

You look beautiful and most of all you are “glowing” that happiness an expectant mom only can.

It is very NORMAL to feel the anxiety you do and I am so happy for you that you able to do the ultrasound and helped you to calm you down.

I love your videos and posts.

Sending you lots of faith, blessings and love 🙂 from TN

  19. I’m really enjoying your updates! It’s so lovely to see how happy you are!

I’m sure you’re getting baby info thrown at you from all angles, so I thought I’d just contribute!! My impression is that you like things natural and Eco etc so I thought I’d pass on some things my niece in law uses with her baby in case you’re interested to do more research.

The first is an alternative to the usual baby carrier (although she has one of those too and I notice you showed one in you baby haul) but she mostly does “baby wearing” I won’t go into all the details here, but thought you might be interested

The other thing is she uses is a modern take on traditional Terry nappies which use natural bamboo fabric liners (she also uses bamboo fabric bibs as they are so soft and natural) but the nappies seem a much better option than disposables, if being “green” is a concern

  20. You and Don are truly blessed in every way. This is just a thought, but since your baby will have everything she needs or wants, why not have your subscribers who wish to send gifts donate to homeless shelters, or perhaps children’s charities in honor of your daughter. All my best wishes for a peaceful pregnancy and delivery of your beautiful daughter.

    1. I would absolutely love that. I’ll try to remember to encourage that in my next video. Thanks for the wonderful suggestion!

  21. You already have the glow!you are gorgeous. From the photos I can tell your bump is growing.
I’m really excited for both nurseries and loving the unicorns so far! I don’t really have any questions but I am wondering if you will do a video with don? I know there are a lot of request for videos so no big deal lol! Best wishes 🙂

    1. Yes, absolutely. We’re planning this around the halfway mark, so in just a few weeks! Stay tuned 🙂

      1. Hi Jen,
I didn’t feel my first baby move until 19 weeks. I hated it when others asked me “Have you felt her move yet?” and I would say no and they would look horrified. Every pregnancy is different. You are doing great.

  22. Jen,I can’t tell you how happy I am for you and Don. Also, well done for going for your ultrasound – very proactive and wise, I thought… you needed reassurance and you went and got it! I think you’re doing great. Lots of love xxx

  23. Jen- your bump has definitely grown for sure and your BOOBS!!!! you look great! Can’t wait to see more updates! xoxo

  24. Congratulations! I am so so happy for you and your family! Babies are such a blessing! My baby boy just turned 7 months old so I was pregnant this time last year. I bought a Sonoline fetal Doppler online to be able to hear the baby’s heartbeat anytime for peace of mind. Just wanted to suggest this and to congratulate you! Hope you continue to have a happy and healthy pregnany! Enjoy every minute once she is here they get big so quickly. Take care!

  25. I’m not one to usually comment on things but I can totally relate to your anxiety. After having a miscarriage 3 months prior to conception I was a NERVOUS WRECK. Of course, my hormones out of whack and I was extremely emotional. But one day, about this far along, I worked myself into a full blown panic attack. I wasn’t feeling the baby move and I was just all around nervous. I called my doctor’s office and in between my sobs explained what was going on. They brought me in and used the Doppler to find baby’s heartbeat. It felt like a million years and then they finally found it. It was such a relief.

I spent my entire pregnancy being nervous. I’m sure my poor son was annoyed at all the poking and prodding he received once I could feel him kick just so I could get reassurance that he was okay in there.

I thought once I gave birth all my anxiety would go away but it didn’t. You will always be nervous about something as a mom. But it is the most amazing and rewarding experience you’ll ever have. Watching this little human you created grow and learn and become their own individual is indescribable.

I don’t know if anyone has said this to you before, but you don’t know love until you have your child on your chest for the first time. It sounds crazy and silly but it’s so true. Once that little, itty, bitty baby is there you figure out just how much love your heart can hold.

Congratulations and good luck. Have a happy & healthy pregnancy! And try not to worry. Right now baby girl is in the safest place she can be 🙂

I’ve rambled far too long 😉

  26. Those are great ultrasound pictures! Well worth the money for sure. And if it eases your all too normal anxiety I say even better! Things will feel so much better once you feel those kicks. I didn’t feel anything until 18 weeks with my first and 17 with my second so I’m sure it’s just around the corner for you!

  27. Hi Jen! I have watched your videos for years and always enjoy your sharing 🙂 Hubby and I both enjoy watching what you guys are up to. I am so happy for you and Don!! I had my first baby this past October. The first time I felt him moving when I was pregnant was when I put headphones to my belly! (I’m a piano teacher so the music had to be Chopin, hehe!) Something to try!

  28. Congratulations on your pregnancy. You are the first YouTube creator I have followed that is sharing their pregnancy story. After delivering triplets over 6 years ago I just couldn’t revisit any pregnancy stories for a while. But I had been hoping you would be telling us that a little one was on the way over the last year. The bump will start growing quickly now, when I was 16 weeks I was showing as if I was over 6 months, lol. I was worried what I would look like when I finally got to my term. Best of luck, you are glowing so beautifully.

  29. I don’t usually comment, but I am SO happy for you! I’ve been watching your videos forever and feel like we know each other. I just had my baby in March after trying for 2.5 years! He was actually due in June and was 3 months early, but we’re finally home after a long time in the NICU (over 3 months).

I was also super nervous around 16ish weeks. If it makes you feel any better I didn’t really start feeling much until after 20 weeks. I don’t honestly remember exactly when. I wish I had recorded my pregnancy better so I’m glad you’re doing this to look back on later.

Looking forward to seeing you and Don become parents. It’s seriously the best. I have no time for anything these days, but it’s totally worth it.

  30. My friend is pregnant too and her first symptom was headaches! We both work in the Neuro department of our hospital and she told me it made her feel anxious that it could be Neuro related… it was the reason why she decided to go see a doctor and found out she was pregnant! Lol! She’s a first time mom too and will be due in September! 🙂

  31. I definitely see a change in your baby bump. It has grown! I am loving your pregnancy videos and all your excitement. Don’t worry about getting worried. Some of use are like that.
I love your appreciation of the good things in your life and your love of family. This little girl is going to be lucky to join such a caring group.

  32. Hey Jen,
The BEST most comfy, softest, all organic cotton and cutest PJ’s are at Hanna Andersson
They also have amazing comfy clothes and the girls clothes are to DIE for cute;) My boys have lived in their jammies for years. Even my 11 yr old still wants to wear them b/c they are so comfy:) They are pricy but they do run sales, just sign up to get sale notice emails;) And they are 100% worth it in my opinion;) And I have been using them for years. They do have a store in a mall near me, maybe they do for you too?
SOOOO HAPPY for you & Don! And I am so excited you are letting us come along on this journey with you.

  33. oh…. and I rented a doppler with my 2nd for cheap. Online they mailed it to me for a certain rental period and I mailed it back when I was done. Easy and so fun! And I LOVED being able to hear the heartbeat daily before I could feel the kicks;)

  34. I understand your feelings of uncertainty. I am currently 25 weeks pregnant with my second (another girl). I started feeling movement at about 19 weeks. We are finally to the point where my husband can feel it sometimes too. That movement can be reassuring but can also bring new stresses. “Haven’t felt her move in a while hope everything is ok”, “what time was it when she kicked last.” I have to remind myself to relax too. It is hard to always be wondering what is happening in there. One day baby can be really busy and then next not as much. Enjoy it! I have loved being pregnant and playing back with those little kicks. I am very happy for you.

  35. Don’t worry about that baby bump, you are doing great and look wonderful. I was just like you when I was pregnant with my kids. I was young and in shape when I had my daughter, when I was pregnant with my son 10 years later I was in the gym 5 days a week and actually competing on our powerlifting team. I was is such good shape exercising everyday that I did not show until about 6 months, My husband always says I went to bed one night and the next morning I woke up with a baby bump( a big one ) So don’t ever be worried, you are doing everything right. Keep the updates coming, maybe we can see Don in a vlog , I would like to know if he has caught the cravings by association yet.

  36. Oh Jen, she’s already so beautiful!! Look at that little button nose! 🙂 I love the unicorn!!! So precious!
Will you have a 3D ultrasound when she gets bigger? I had one with 2 of my kids, and they looked exactly like their u/s pics! You’ve probably already been told about this, but you can rent or buy a dopplar to check her heart tones daily. I got one when I was pregnant with my first son (after I had 2 girls) because I was so anxious throughout the whole pregnancy. It put my mind at ease! Have a great weekend!!

    1. I’m not sure about the 3D thing….we’ll have to see how we feel about it further down the road. I know lots of people love having that experience, though!

  37. So fun!!! I had horrible headaches with all four of my full-term pregnancies – right about this time (early 2nd trimester). I kept a bag of green peas in the freezer that was labeled “headache peas” — I used it on my head (it molds nicely to the noggin). And keep slugging the water as that will help the headaches, too.

  38. It just seems like one week updates are not enough 🙁
But congratulations to you and thank you for sharing with us!

    1. I’m also throwing in an extra video & post once a week (although maybe not always once a week) that is pregnancy related, like my What I Eat video this week and a maternity haul next week if you’re interested in more 🙂

  39. Jennifer,

Congratulations to both you and Don! You look absolutely amazing, so beautiful and glowing and happy! I wish you the best and I am way past this stage in my life – my children are almost out of the house, it goes fast. Enjoy every moment – treasure each memory!

    XO Marsha XO
