Pinspired | DIY Coffee Scrub

I’ve wanted to try my hand at making my own body scrubs for awhile now.  After a quick search on Pinterest, I noticed how popular DIY coffee scrubs are.  With just a few easily accessible ingredients I was able to put together a really nice homemade scrub.

I narrowed down my Pinterest search to recipes from four blogs, including Wonky WonderfulLiving Chic on the Cheap, The Beauty Place, and London Like the City.  All of these recipes call for varying proportions of the same three ingredients: ground coffee, oil, and sugar.

I decided to use fresh ground coffee for my scrub, because the caffeine packs an extra punch.  Coffee is not only a manual exfoliant, but also has skin toning and firming effects thanks to caffeine.  There is no evidence that use of coffee scrubs has a long term effect on skin quality, but many find it can temporary reduce the appearance of cellulite.

The two main oils bloggers seem to use in coffee scrubs are extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil.  I picked coconut oil for its natural soothing effects on skin.  Fatty acids help to smooth skin and vitamin E acts as a skin protectant.

I chose brown sugar as the other exfoliant ingredient in my scrub.  Not only is it a great exfoliant with a texture that is not too harsh but still effective, the glycolic acid in brown sugar supports skin cell turnover.

Lastly, I added a small amount of kukui nut oil for its amazing moisturizing properties.  I love a scrub that both exfoliates and moisturizes.

Here is how I made my own DIY Coffee Scrub:

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Coffee (freshly ground)
1/4 cup Coconut Oil (melted & cooled)
1/2 cup Brown Sugar
1-2 T Kukui Nut Oil

Simply mix all ingredients until blended and store in an airtight container.  Adjust ingredient proportions to your liking.  Scrub on and rinse off!  Enjoy 🙂

I hope you enjoyed this installment of my Pinspired series.  I’d love to know if you give this scrub recipe or your own variation a try.  Feel free to share in the comments or tag me on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter.
Happy Scrubbing!
