Pantry Clean-Up | Summer 2016

An untidy pantry is not a pretty sight.  Our pantry nose-dived into chaos after our baby was born.  It sat in neglect for months as clutter accumulated, making it not only an eye sore but also a challenge to navigate.  Enough is enough!  I finally got around to sifting and sorting through the mess and thought I’d share my process and results with you.

pantry clean-up before and after 2016

I knew this was more of a clean-up project than a reorganizing one, as the last organizational overhaul I implemented seemed to still be working for us for the most part.  The clutter was a result of neglect, not a dysfunctional organizational structure.  It’s important for me to comb through my pantry on a regular basis to make sure we are using about-to-expire items and generally tidy up.  I honestly can’t remember the last time I did a proper pantry purge.

It took me about an hour total to go through each shelf, toss expired items, sort nonperishable food to donate, and tidy up.  I took the time to wipe down each shelf and empty out crumbs from the bins.  What a difference an hour of dedicated attention makes!  I didn’t change the organization of the pantry except for moving one shelf down a bit and swapping the location of a few items to suit our current needs.  I use an Elfa system in our pantry which makes it super easy to tweak the structural arrangement whenever I need to make changes,

I am loving the finished result!  The arrangement and location of food and other items suits our current needs with a growing little one.  We eat mostly fresh foods so it’s easy for nonperishable items to get lost in the mix.  I’m going to try to make a point of doing a pantry sweep seasonally from now on so it doesn’t descend into chaos again.

I share much more detail about the clean up, including a proper before and after tour of the pantry in this video:

I hope you enjoyed this peek at my pantry clean-up.  I’d love to know if you’ve been inspired to take on a neglected space in your home lately.  Completing manageable projects like this motivates me to tackle even bigger ones.

Happy Tidying!

  1. Wow, that didn’t take very long. I have been doing zone cleaning for about three months and I love it. It keeps my house tidy and clean, and the big plus is my weekends are for family time, which I love.

    Thank you for sharing!

  2. I’m so excited to see this post because your home organizational videos have always been my favorite. Glad to see you going back to basics!

  3. I have been doing this to a spare room. I bought that same Elfa over the door system to organize my wrapping supplies. I installed Elfa shelves in a walk-in closet to better organize my craft and scrapbooking supplies and Christmas decor. I purged so much and am giving away a lot of stuff. Feels so good!

  4. This video made my day on a day where I really needed it. Thank you! I found your channel three years ago at a time when my anxiety was at its worst and your videos on organization and other housewife topics literally changed my life. I found your channel by searching for housewife videos while I was in the process of leaving my job to start a new life at home. Your videos showed me all of the great things I can still accomplish without working outside the home and helped me to stay on top of things with lists,
notebooks, and super-sticky post-it notes 😊 and it all felt so exciting to me like a new chapter of my life had really begun. I can’t tell you how much you have inspired me. For the past few months, I have had a lot of hardships thrown into my path and it has been so hard for me to keep my head up. Just very recently, I have started to pull myself up and seeing this video today brought me back to that same mindset I had three years ago where I was so full of joy and excitement about my life as a housewife and it gave me so much motivation. Thanks I really truly needed this pick-me-up today and I loved the video! You are still the queen of organization in my book 😉!

  5. Great video Jen and it has really helped to think what I can do when my little one is napping! Sometimes it can seem really overwhelming but a few smaller jobs that I can manage without any help will hopefully keep me going. Love the over door storage…might look for something like that for a big cupboard we have that is a bit of a dumping ground! Thanks for sharing, hope you are all well xx

  6. I see a big packet of baking flour. I assume you do not use all of it at one time. How do you store the flour that are not used? In its original package and then clipped it?

    1. Yep! I find that it stays pretty fresh for the frequency that we go through the bag. If we don’t use it for awhile I’ll pop it in a large ziplock bag.

      1. I am quite surprised that you did not store it in a large container 🙂 any reason for not doing it?

For me, since I live in a tropical country, I store it in a ziploc bag and in a freezer !!

  7. Looks great Jennifer! We just replaced all the shelving in our pantry and it’s a blank slate for us now. I’m working on a pantry inspiration round-up. Do you mind if I use a photo from one of your pantry posts in my post? I will give you full credit and link back of course. Please let me know. Thank you so much!

  8. Hi!
I recently had a plumber scheduled which led me to clean out below my sink and what a mess! I had a couple of dawns and one Palmolive dish soap i dont know why i have more than i could use at once i guess for variety?!? Anyways it has less now ☺

  9. It was great seeing one of your organization videos again! I will be moving into a new home next month. I have some great ideas now for how I will go about arranging my own pantry. Thanks for the tips!

  10. Aaahahaaargh a new organisation video!!!!!!

SO EXCITED about this, I’ve watched all your organisational vids already (and several times!!) so I had been so looking forward to a new one!!!

Going to save it for a peaceful time when I can really enjoy it.

Thanks for sharing again, hope you enjoy posting these kind of vids again, and hope your wonderful little family is doing great.

    Cuddles to Winnie 😉

  11. Any ideas what to do with cookbooks? I have them on a pantry shelf so they are in the kitchen where I can use them. But they take up precious space.I don’t really want to clutter up counter space with them either…

  12. I really enjoy that you show us thing that you may not think are important. Its the day to day vlog that make you one of my favorite to watch on you tube. Have you considered taking a family vacation to Disney World. We took 8 month old twins to Disney recently. The way their faces lit up for characters and fireworks was a memory i will never forget. Plus, its always so enjoyable to see you and don enjoying Disney:)

  13. Love your organization videos! Loving seeing how you organize your pantry. We moved into a new house not too long ago and I’ve been struggling with how to organize it! I love having a peek into someone else’s organized space! 😍

  14. I’m so glad you posted this! I used to love when you would post videos cleaning and organizing small spaces! I love the way your organizational brain works!!

  15. How deep is your pantry? I’m considering ripping out the shelving in my pantry and installing Elfa. However my pantry is SUPER deep (like I can stand inside and close the door).
