Organizing A Blog

Three days into being an official *blogger* and this is what I know so far:

❊ Blogging is fun!
❊ Comments from you guys are awesome!
❊ I am absolutely in love with my blog design & layout.
❊ I am such a newbie!  Everything takes a LONG time since I am learning.
❊ Blog organization is tricky…

It took me a very, very long time (better part of the year to be honest) to decide how to go about organizing this blog.  Having three YouTube channels featuring different types of content & subjects posed quite the dilemma at first.  I had to decide whether I was going to have one blog or three separate ones (which could possibly all funnel into a main website), and accordingly, one domain name or four separate ones.  This was a toughie.  As much as the categorizer in me loves the idea of the multi-blog main website, ultimately I decided it wasn’t realistic for me to take on such a huge blogging endeavor like that on top of my YouTube filming & editing to-dos.  Having one blog where I can post pretty much anything I want and just file it under one of my three YouTube channels as categories was the simplest option.

That I actually chose the least complicated path comes as a delightful surprise to me.  I usually chose the more challenging way when it comes to pretty much anything.  When I was younger I believed I acted this way in order to prove myself to others as someone who could aim high and accomplish lofty goals.  This belief started to shift in the latter half of my college education when I realized what I really desired was the challenge itself and to push myself just because I could.  I worked my tail off in school to achieve the highest marks possible.  Since then, my desire to learn and be the best version of myself has been the driving force for all that I do in my life.

This can be a bit of a double-edged sword, however, since it is very easy for me to over-commit myself and my time.  In the past few years in particular I have worked on making boundaries for the purpose of allowing myself some breathing room.  I cannot be idle.  I am always on the move (quite literally!) with multiple projects going at any one time.  I am fiercely stubborn when it comes to finishing what I started.  Couple that with a tendency to chose the more complicated version of accomplishing something and the possibility of burnout looms perilously close by.  As much as I am excited & inspired by my new career as an Original Content Creator (and all that it entails), I must be very careful not to take on more than I can feasibly handle.  I will always take on a lot as it is in my nature to do so.  I’m in my comfort zone when I am functioning at full capacity.  The choices I made for organizing this blog symbolize growth on my part.  Yes, I am taking on another endeavor, one that will require much time & energy, and is a true commitment in those senses, but I chose the simplest path.  The blog (and my efforts for it) are organized, but not micro-categorized.  That, my friends, is real growth.

It is a joy to walk down this path and enjoy it with you all.  Let’s grow together 🙂

  1. Love this post………alot of work goes into blogging and I love the choice you made to keep it one blog with tags to the you tube channels! Great decision! 🙂

  2. Another great post Jen. I understand where you come from so fully, and it’s so wonderful to know that there are others who commit to the same lofty, ambitious goals that are self-imposed. Loving the blog!

  3. Great post Jen! I am glad that you have joined the world of blogging! Dont let it overwhelm you though! Blog when you can and we will all enjoy your thoughtful post! Love and blessings in this new year of new blog beginnings! 🙂

  4. I’m the total opposite-I get stressed and anxious, then run down and sick when I have a lot on my plate. I’ve learned the hard way that I require “down time”. Whether that means reading, Pinterest, tv, or just hanging with my husband I need to not be busy every minute of every day.

I was so excited to see you blogging! I’m a relatively new youtube subscriber of yours. I just started watching in September. I have my own blogging ambitions but I’m afraid to pull the trigger. I’d love to do a nail polish blog (as if there aren’t enough!) but I’m afraid of the time commitment. I personally love when bloggers post something nearly everyday but I don’t think I could commit to that so I’m dragging my feet at getting started. I tend to be a “fly by the seat of my pants” kind of girl but I want to do it the right way when I know I can commit to a certain schedule. How did you first decide how often you were going to post a video on youtube when you first started out?

    1. I didn’t set out a schedule for myself when I first got started, since it was purely a hobby. Last year I tried committing to one video per week per channel, but I soon realized that wasn’t very realistic for OLJ & WTZT, the former which is project based and the latter which I have less content for. Now I just try to upload when I can and not get too caught up in strict schedules. I’m working on a time management schedule of sorts this month to encompass all that I do between videos, blogging, & communicating with you guys. I’ll definitely post a video on OLJ as soon as I’ve worked something out!

You should go for the blog! Maybe if you don’t worry too much about a schedule & just post when you can for the joy of it, you’ll find that what you can do is enough & rewarding for you all the same. Please send along a link if and when you get it up and running.

  5. I’m so excited to see the blog up and running! It’s so cute! (And very you) from what I’ve learned by following your channels. I know you must have a growing to-do list and many requests coming in, so I’ll try to be brief. I’m striving towards being a better me in 2013. That includes eating right, losing weight, and getting myself better organized. I have already watched many of your videos for guidance thus far. Honestly, since you are so far in your journey of fitness and healthy eating, I think I’m searching for where to start. A beginner’s guide to eating clean/organic, etc. and a beginner’s guide to getting organized. (Computer files, paper files, photo backlog).

If this is not something you want to pursue, I totally understand, and will just continue to watch for tips from your regularly scheduled videos! Thanks in advance for your consideration.

    1. Those are all subjects I’d love to touch upon at some point. My general advise for anything, though, is to start small (baby steps!) and take it from there. Much less overwhelming to overhaul old habits that way.

  6. I have been really enjoying your videos. I’ve set up my filofax to work with my scrapbooking because I saw your video…and have been inspired to get organized with little projects complete. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Would you be able to speak more about how you were able to work towards setting boundaries? I keep trying to, but find myself continuing to overwhelm myself. I want to be the most successful at everything, but burnout is imminent, and I would love some tips. 🙂

  8. Honestly, this blog is so fun, bright and cheery, and just makes me happy! As long as you post content, I’ll be here too! Congrats on everything you have accomplished so far, and I know it will only continue to grow, as you work very hard. I speak for many people when I say how proud we are of you, and it’s fun to share and be a “family” together! <3

  9. I can’t wait to see how you grow with your blog! You will do awesome! I am a new fan of just a few months but I enjoy watching you and Winnie. I love that you are super down to earth and I am obsessed with organizing as well. Keep up the good work Jen 🙂

  10. Hi Jen, so happy to share your happiness of your new adventures…I wish for you the ability to still stay focused on the importance of being a full time homemaker, caring for your beautiful home, Don & family. It’s very easy to get sweep up and even pressured into having a “job” or “career”, even if it is one that is so creative. I was so relieved & delighted when I first found your YouTube videos…to watch a young person be so in love with home and doing the most important “job” of all times, homemaking…and obviously you are so very talented at this as well. Please keep this path and don’t take on things that could pull you away from having the time, energy and devotion to your home, family and friends. Jen, please come visit me anytime on my FB page…it is totally deicated to “home”. With great love, Carol

    1. Don’t worry! I’m a complete homebody & love taking care of my home & kin. No amount of outside obligations will ever change that 🙂

  11. I love this personal story from you Jen. Challenges give us a way to grow. I (usually) welcome them with open arms! I find that I come out with more knowledge than I started with (either good or bad). Life is all about having learning experiences! Otherwise, we’d all just be boring slugs 🙂

  12. These blog posts are so well written they make reading them an absolute joy. Beautiful blog page Jen, so simple but so full with out being to busy looking. Great job! x

  13. I to Jen usually take the harder path. It looks like a lot of work to get through the hard way, but once you make it or in your case get used to it and do it for a while, it is easy peesy lemon squeezy! Then, you can look back at your accomplishments and say, wow I really did that! Such as I am taking on running, it may be time consuming, but it will pay out. Although sometimes, we do have to take the simpler path, at least we choose a path and don’t stand their and stair at the sign for days and days going, ” What way do I go?” Thank you Jen for all you do! If you have any comments, I’d love to here them!
    Bella 🙂 ((HUGS))

  14. Hi Jen!!
Just stopped by to congratulate you facing this new chalenge!
Did you received my Christmas Card? I hope so!
Love from your friend and fan from Portugal, Telma Sousa.

  15. Hi Jen!
I have been following you for about 7 months. I absolutely love you and Don and Winnie! Watching your videos is the one time in my day I stop and sit still. I am so happy for you to get the blog off the ground. Utah looks so beautiful. And I wish you well in all that is coming up for you and in the marathons.

My daughter knows when Jen is on, it’s Mumma’s quiet time. lol And she now follows a girl on you tube. She says I am watching my Jen, when she watches. lol too funny!

    Love and Light! 🙂

  16. Sorry forgot to add this to my other comment. Do you think you can do another Disney packing series and/or tips for Disney travel? I am a Disney World fanatic and love all things Disney! Hope you vlog too!
    Bella 🙂 ((HUGS))
P.S. Good luck and have FUN!!!

    1. I’m not sure if I’ll do another Disney packing video since I already covered that topic. Probably will vlog during out trip tho!

  17. LOVE the new blog site. The design is so representative of your spirit, energy and light! Way to go………..will look forward to following you in this new medium as well as on You Tube. CONGRATS! ~Melissa

  18. Another great post Jen! I have a blog and was unable to blog as much as I wanted, work and home life took over.. I decided this year to blog about anything and everything so to speak. My blog was set up so I could post my craft stuff, but I found that I was posting about other things as well. So far this year I have two posts! I definitely like that you have one blog with options to go to the different channels. Definitely loving your posts. So looking forward to more! Thank you for sharing! P.S. I did grab your badge and posted it on my blog :).

  19. I started blogging a couple of years ago on my blogspot blog. But I have semi retired it for now because I am concentrating on getting fit and losing weight to be healthy (which has inspired me to start a vlog, although I don’t know if I will or not start it)!! Which turns out I actually love blogging about fitness and health!! Anyways I just wanted to tell you that you are my inspiration!! I love watching your Youtube channels and I have become much more organized since I started watching OLJ!!! Thank you for sharing your life with us!! BTW you and Don are the cutest couple!!

  20. Hi, Jen! I’ve been following you on youtube for many months now and have been loving all of what you do! You are a reminder of myself in how I used to be… .. (before many hardships in my life that I have overcome!! *whoooot!!)… You’ve been a positive inspiration and I feel happy and comforted when I watch your vlogs and videos. —- Your new blogging is an exciting addition to how you share yourself with your fans. Thanks for all you do! 🙂 🙂

  21. Love the Mary Englebreit art. So fitting for this post… I especially love the little owl! So cute! Can’t wait to see what the future brings!

  22. You are such an inspiration Jen. I love watching your videos and now reading your blogs. Thank you for committing your time and sharing with us!

  23. Hi Jen! I’m a relatively new subscriber and I am a huge fan of your organization techniques. I just saw that you started a blog and I wanted to say congratulations! I am encouraged by your entry today because you have described my personality type in a nutshell so its good to see there is hope for me yet! Its important to note that you have an excellent style of writing that is easy and enjoyable to read yet still polished and articulate! I wish you continued success for 2013 and I lok forward to one day subscribing to your magazine (once you reach “mogul” status, its sort of what you do next… just saying..) Hugs from VA!

  24. Love your blog and your Youtube channels! You are an awesome vlogger and will be an awesome blogger as well! Looking forward to following you. The layout is super cute by the way! Happy New Year to you! Hope it’s a fabulous year for you!

  25. Congratulations on your blog Jen! Very nice layout. You made the right decision by centralizing all of your channel content information in one, well organized location. It makes it so much easier to to find and keep up with your latest works.
It also allows you to expand and editorialize on your works and just everyday thoughts and ideas.
    Well done!

  26. I’m so happy for you!
I look forward to reading your blog, it will be in my favorites list !
Thank you for the blog announcement video very sweet almost cried with ya lol.
You look like you would be a great friend sadly other people are the ones who are flaky so dont worrie we like you. Jen you might not know it but you are like a friend to us, all the people reading and watching. I struggle with making friends because its hard to find the right people I guess. I stick to my family too and wish to find genuine people to share things with.

    Thanks for your time 🙂

    love Lili G

  27. Jen I think I have the opposite problem! Though I feel overwhelmed and stressed alot, I don’t think I believe in myself enough to challenge myself to my full potential. I don’t know how many times I’ve thought about doing something, yet not done it out of fear of a). social requirements/standards and/or b). a lack of self belief. Getting out of this mindset this year though!

Thanks for the blogs! Always read with a cup of tea/coffee.

  28. I love your new blog! Mary Englebreight is my favorite artist…and the picture you chose is also one of my favorite.

Your videos have been a HUGE help to me in getting me organized and inspired. You are a gift to all of us. Thank you for sharing.

  29. You’ve come a long way already. Look at your first Youtube video! You were good then on camera and now you are even better! I applaud you for sharing so much of your life with your viewers and fans. That takes a lot of courage and effort! I can’t imagine how you do it all. It’s truly a full time job! Your inner strength must be what keeps you going. You are an inspiration to us all and I’m so proud of you as a fellow woman for all that you do and have accomplished so far. I only see you getting better and bigger and reaching even higher goals than you can even imagine right now. You remind me of what I’ve always been told, that ‘If you move one step today towards your goals in life then by this time next year you will be that much closer to your dreams. If you don’t take that step, then you’ll be right where you are this time next year and no closer to any of your goals or dreams’….so keep on stepping’ sister! We, your fans love and adore you and we support you in all that you do because you are positive…and good! Even when negativity tries to follow you, your light from within never is drowned out by it! And you know that whatever is good will always have bad trying to attack it, but you always come out on top. That inner peace from above shines brightly through you. You are a success Jen and you always will be! So proud of you!!

Thank you for adding the email sub box! 🙂

  30. I’m so loving your new blog/website.
Setting boundaries and also not being a afraid to enjoy your self are a tricky combination. I find that I am so in love with words like stressed out and busy that I don’t actually analyze on daily basis what is the real situation. With little bit of deep breathing and juicing and the “stress” is gone.
I would really recommend Danielle La Porte’s books Fire starter sessions and her latest Desire map. Amazing for playing around with the idea of how do you actually want to feel compared to goals.

  31. I love the image you picked for the blog post. I also highly admire your respect for other people creations. Many will just – if any – add source: Google; pinterest , etc.

You go your way and beyond. Apart from the post itself, I must congratulate you on this.

  32. Jen congratulations on the blog. It is so wonderful to see someone set themselves a target and not give up. You’ve spoken about this blog for a long time and to see it come to fruition is testament to your tenacity. The blog is bright cheerful well thought out and your posts have been interesting. Look forward to many many years of your wisdom. You go Girl!!

  33. I will follow you in your new endeavors. For you have no Idea how much you have helped me to come out of a deep depression. When your mind is occupied you only have room to carry out your plans which is what I have been doing with all your suggestions. I even purchased some body gels and lotions to pamper myself after a long day of work. Thank you Jen for your help!

  34. I have a bad habit of reading every organizing book or blog I can find but I rarely implement what I’ve read. Why? Lack of time? Too many decisions required before something can actually come to fruition? Too busy reading?
BUT I have tried a FiloFax, based on your video. It’s hard to work with (I’m a Franklin Planner girl) but it’s all set up and I’m ready to try! I LOVE your OLJ videos and while, when I first started watching, I wasn’t a MHWL fan, now? OMG, I just LOVE when I see a new video or vlog post!
Just wanted to say thank you for creating a central place for me to come for another Jen fix, and I think you made the right decision in how to organize it – I only have to come here to see what’s new, not to three different blogs…
Thanks! And good luck with all you do! You help an awful lot of people, whether you know it or not!

  35. Hi Jen

congratulations on your blog getting up and running. I have enjoyed watching so many of your videos on youtube the past year and i have to say a big thankyou to you. Like yourself i love a good project especially when it comes to organizing a room in our home. Things arent as easy these days as me&hubby have our two little princesses (2&4) which take up alot of our time. Anyway as i was saying sometimes just watching one of your posts really motivates me when i need it most. One thing i have to work on this year is time management and watching everything you achieve in a day can really give me that nudge i need. I too struggle with social anxiety at times and it is a comfort to see im not alone with how many people that comment on your videos also have found
your true calling with social media and i can see how much you have reflected your self confidence in your videos the past year. Its amazing and i am very happy for you. I wish you& your famiIy all the very best for 2013.

  36. Blogging is the best. I’ve enjoyed every second of having mine, and it is almost like having a journal. I hope that you continue to love it too! And once again, I just love your logo. It’s just perfect. 🙂

  37. I love your blog…Congratulations!!!!! I have been watching your videos for about a year now and your organization videos have helped me a lot. I understand your anxiety issues as I get very anxious in social situations and also have had issues holding on to friendships over the years. I am happy that you have found an outlet that lets you be comfortable in your own skin. Keep smiling!!!!!!

  38. Jen,
I love your new blog Its wonderful Im trying to do a blog also I just havent gottin around to what blog to use I love all your videos TFS

  39. Jen, I love the new blog. I almost love reading what you write almost as much as viewing the vlogs. Great job, and congrats on the self-discovery.

  40. Jen, congratulations on your new blog! I am so impressed by your ability to identify a goal, how to achieve it and then actually implement it! It’s truly inspiring to see a young woman challenge herself and succeed as publicly as you have. You have amazing courage and I really look forward to joining you on your blogging journey. I already love your YT videos and appreciate your hard work in posting quality videos. This is probably not the nicest thing to say but it is difficult to watch other similar YT channels after seeing how well yours are done! No one can hold a candle to yours! Anyhow, thank you for putting yourself “out here”. I really feel you have limitless potential in anything you choose to do. One last thing I’d like to share with you which may seem odd, but I really feel like you could be the next Martha Stewart. A more modern, relatable version! Ahhh, but one thing at a time I guess… Got to get your blog rolling! 🙂 wishing you must success on your journey, I will be watching and reading!

  41. Congrats on the blog; it looks fantastic. Wasn’t sure if you knew that pier 1 is
having a 75% sale off of Christmas decor. They had a lot of cute owl items as well that
    reminded me of you.

  42. Jen, I found you on youtube a few days ago, and have watched as many as your posts as time has allowed. I came across your blog tonight and have enjoyed reading your posts. You are fabulous to watch and listen to as well.
    Happy New Year,

  43. Great to see you setting some boundaries for yourself – and knowing that you need them! Life is a complete learning experience. I personally need extra downtime, as when I get busy and stressed, I get sick, so I have to schedule down time.

That said, I think it’s wonderful that you have forged an amazing career for yourself. Looking forward to the future ride! x

  44. It’s a lovely blog Jen. I’ve been watching your vlogs for a few months now and am delighted to see this next great step. I hope to take strength from your energy and enthusiasm to motivate myself to achieve my goals for this year. I wish you, your sweet hubby Don and that delightful fur ball Winnie much joy for this year in your own endeavours. Not having a wide social circle myself it is for me as it is for others here a real feeling of friendship to join you in this next venture- congratulations. Affie xx

  45. Decisions are quick, it’s the planning and thoughts behind that decision which can take time. I personally have less regrets if I prepare and think about each part before going ahead with the final project. Walt Disney use to say he would look at every angle of an idea/story before moving ahead with it. If you do that then you’ve looked at all sides and decided what is best for you, no matter what anyone says. You remove anxiety if you know in your heart everything is how YOU want it to be.

Well done, not just in this endeavor but in sticking to it, creating content and realizing what your strengths are and fine tuning bits that you might not be happy with. That new Canon camera you got should add even more quality to these projects. It can feel overwhelming with equipment like that…so many possibilities! Stay with it. Experiment, explore and try things out, sometimes those are the best learning experiences you can have. All those things build on each other and move you forward. Every detail you decide to share is fascinating for different people in all sorts of ways. Keep feeding your mind Jen, keep sharing your ideas and showing us your view of the world. Your style is your story.

    1. I think it says a lot about Jen that she attracts the kind of people you’re talking about! Although I generally find people who are into organization pretty awesome 😉

  46. Congratulations of the launch of the blog (and TBBB!). I consider myself more of a “lurker” (I don’t comment much), but have been a subscriber from almost the beginning of your OLJ channel (and now several others)! This launch was too big to not send a note of congratulations! I love that while you have separated your channels, the new blog design and logos are so similar and related there is no question that I’m viewing some genuine Jen content! Congrats again and can’t wait to see what 2013 brings!

  47. I only found your You Tube channels a couple of months ago and have been addicted ever since! I thought i was quite organised but you have inspired me. I now have a 2013 project book and my husband and i have fulled cleared our attic this morning and have put everything back neatly in marked bins. Next project will be to sort out the garage. Wishing you a very happy New Year.

  48. Hi Jen!
I just had a really bad night last night, but you made me feel better. I had to go to the hospital and get checked out. But all I could do was think about the vlogs that would be waiting for me when I get home! I also had a question, where are you staying in Disney Land? I know you are staying at the grand floridian in Florida! Thanks!
    Bella 🙂 ((HUGS))

  49. I have been blogging for a few years now and I am still learning new things all time. That’s one thing I like about it actually, that it can be a constant education and I love learning new things all the time. I love your design it is awesome and I am so glad you went the wordpress route. Enjoy 🙂

  50. I just wanted to let you know, on your newest Ipsy open box and review, in the beginning it says Birchbox. Thought you should know! 🙂

  51. Hi Jen! Just wanted to say congratualtions on your wonderful new venture! I love the design and, as with your vlog content, the thoughts and ideas you share. I usually do not comment that often on bloga, but I want you to know that I am here too! I wish you a wonderful 2013, and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen here in jen-land – or as i think of it – my happy-land! I work from home and just love starting my day with breakfast and your YouTube-videos. Thanks for making the world brighter 🙂

    Best wishes from Sweden,

  52. Hi Jen, I think your idea of one blog with all your content is a great decision. This way people like myself you found you through one channel, for me OLJ get to see what you offer on your other channels. BTW I now subscribe to your other channels too. Having the one stop shop is easier for me and probably many others in this often time poor environment many of us have created for ourselves. You have become an inspiration to me in ways to approach how I organise my time and other aspects and you have given some great pointers, which I have adopted, in how to better maximise my diary when it comes to scheduling stuff. Appreciate all you do. TFS Cheers FiLoMa
