On The Go Review: Erin Condren Suitcase

OJ_OLJ_08-15-2014_01I’m back for the second installment of my Summer Travel Series this year with a new kind of post for me.  I recently acquired one of the gorgeous hard shell suitcases from ErinCondren.com.  As you may have already been able to guess from previous posts, I have become quite the Erin Condren fan over the past 6+ months.  I love to share my favorites with you, and the nice folks at Erin Condren noticed!  As a thank you, they sent me a gift card in the spring to use on whatever I like, no strings attached.  The luggage just happened to be on sale at the time so I took the plunge!  Having never owned or tried out this style suitcase before, I was eager to give it a spin (Pun intended! It’s a spinner 😉 ) on a long weekend trip we took earlier this summer for a family reunion.  I decided to film an “On The Go” style review of the bag while I was traveling with it for the first time (you can see this footage in the coordinating video below) and share my thoughts with you about this suitcase here as well.

Unfortunately, the stand alone photographs I took of the bag and all of its features did not make it with me out to our family vacation home in Utah where I am currently staying for an extended visit.  I did my best to pull images from my video footage, and while I do think they still give you a pretty good sense of the bag, I apologize that they are not higher quality.

I have the large size Quote Party Pops Suitcase in grey.  It measures in at 28″ tall x 20.5″ wide x 12″ deep and weighs 10 pounds empty.  It is made out of a strong polycarbonate composite and comes embellished with a customizable (if you choose) cast vinyl image.  Like I mentioned, this bag is a “spinner” thanks to its four wheel system “allowing for 360 degree maneuverability.”  In other words, it spins!  The telescoping handle works well and stays secure with a push-button locking system.  The suitcase also features a TSA approved lock on the side for security.

The interior is left pretty bare, which I prefer for maximum efficient use of space and to reduce unnecessary added weight to the bag.  The reinforced zipper opens so that the bag lays completely flat for ease of packing.  There is a long, shallow zip pouch located on the side of the bottom half of the bag and a suspension strap that buckles to keep packed items in place.  The top half of the interior features a zip around divider with two shoe pockets and a large, shallow mesh pocket for storing smaller items.  This divider zips completely to secure the contents packed into the top half of the bag so that you can then easily close it.

The entire design is simple, straightforward, and effective.  I was able to easily pack both my own and my husband’s clothing, accessories, and toiletries for our three day trip into the bag and came just under the weight allowance (50 pounds) even with all of my toiletries!  I chose to pack all of of our clothes and softer items in the top half so that I could easily close the bag once I zipped up the dividing partition.  Everything else including our toiletry cases, shoes, and beach gear fit nicely in the bottom half secured by the straps.  The open design makes packing the bag so easy and the hard shell exterior keeps your items from shifting or being squished in transit.  I never thought I would like a hard suitcase so much, but I am officially a convert!

OJ_OLJ_08-15-2014_04As I mentioned, I used this suitcase for the first time earlier this summer.  It was a dream to travel with!  I was worried that the hard shell exterior would make it cumbersome and hard to maneuver, and was pleasantly surprised to find it was just the opposite!  Not only was it a breeze to wheel around both the airport and our destination thanks to the spinner feature, it was also easy to lift in and out of cars and onto luggage racks thanks to the two handles.  Another perk of the bag is that it was super easy to spot at baggage claim.  I received many compliments on it at the airport.

OJ_OLJ_08-15-2014_05The large suitcase is truly the perfect size to pack both of us for three nights.  It’s a goldilocks bag; not too small, not too big, but just right.  Both Don and I felt comfortable rolling it around and he’s got eight inches on me!  I would recommend this bag to anyone in the market for a cute and functional structured suitcase that is a breeze to pack and travel with.  I see myself using this bag frequently for our future travel!

You can receive $10 off your first purchase when you sign up for the Erin Condren newsletter (which means you receive the occasional email on current promotions and new products from them) by clicking here.

Unfortunately, I was informed just yesterday by the company that they are not currently stocking the large size suitcase and are not certain if they will be again in the future.  If I had this information sooner I would not have posted this review as I do not like to share about a product that is no longer available.  I have decided to go ahead with the post still as the large size bag is identical to the currently available medium size option in both construction and utility.  The medium bag is available in black and red, measures 24″ tall x 18″ wide x 10.5″ deep and weighs 6.9 pounds empty.

Please accept my most sincere apologies for this snafu.  I wish it could have been avoided and I will do my best in the future to ensure I only share products in this way that are easily accessible to you.  To be honest, I am quite embarrassed by this unfortunate disconnect.  While I chose to make this review independent of Erin Condren, they were aware that I was going to be posting about it and failed to communicate with me about the availability of the bag in a timely manner.  I will make every effort to avoid this kind of situation in the future.  Thank you for your understanding.

If you’d like a closer look at the Erin Condren large suitcase including how I packed it for our trip and my on the go review, please check out my coordinating video:

  1. I love packing cubes too! They really keep your clothes folded and you don’t have to shuffle through everything to get one item.

  2. Hey Jen! I was just wondering if you could tell me what hotel you booked for your December vacation to Disney World? Also could you tell me how many night you’re staying. It could really help me with planning my upcoming WDW vacation in the New Year! Thanks so much

  3. Hi Jen
Thanks for sharing your packing and travel tips; I love how you separate all your items into packing cubes and pouches.

  4. I have a Heys suitcase that is the same style. I like the hard exterior. But what I don’t like that you put half your stuff on each side, then have to flip half your stuff over and it can fall out. Your fragile items should be on the top, when the suitcase is open, so that they are in the middle when it’s closed. Also sometimes in hotel rooms there isn’t enough room to have the suitcase open, but a suitcase with just a top lid doesn’t take up as much floor space. I don’t unpack if we are only staying one night. Even if I do unpack the last night I like to have everything back in the suitcases and cleaned up. When I need to replace my suitcase I won’t be buying this style again.

    1. Does your suitcase have the zip divider like this one? I feel like it’s an important feature of this style bag…

  5. I have been looking to buy new luggage for a few months now and found this review really helpful! I was wondering also if you have a certain carry-all wallet you use for international travel? I am traveling to London soon and would like to find one to hold all passports, boarding passes, and such. Thank you!

    1. I do have one that I’ve used for years. I’m not at home currently so I cannot look and see who it is by but maybe I will do an international travel airplane essentials video next month and I can showcase it then 🙂

  6. (You may get this post twice…my computer freaked out a bit)
Where did you get your necklace? I love it!
Thanks for introducing me to the Erin Condren products. I love, love, love the planner! I use it to make to do lists on a daily basis and then have a filofax style planner for personal and business appointments. I will have to take a look at the luggage and other EC products.
PS- Are you going to get any products from the new Kikki-K line? I loved that video you posted from Kikki-K of the designing of the new lilac planner.

    1. The necklace was a gift from my Mom. I believe she found it at Kohls.

And yes, I am planning on reviewing the new kikki.K time planners. I’m very excited about it 🙂

    1. There are some who say their CS is awesome and others the opposite…I think they are struggling to catch up with the boom in demand for the products this year. Major growth of a small business is wonderful but also very challenging. Hopefully they will iron out some of the wrinkles soon.

  7. Jennifer,

Another planner you might like is Emily Ley’s SIMPLIFIED PLANNER. Have you heard of her? She’s got a beautiful style and simplicity that I think would be right up your alley.

      1. Emily Ley’s planner is great. I used it for two years. You might also look into Whitney English’s Day Designer. 🙂

  8. Don’t worry Jen, both blog post and video were so helpful and professional as always. I love travelling too and watching your videos made me progress so much in the way I organize my things ! I use most of the time my samsonite soft structured suitcase but i wanted to try a hard shell one after I saw you presenting this one in a previous videos. Guess what, last week I found one -small cabin sized- from american tourister by samsonite that reminded me of yours with cute little dots so I bought it ! also bought my husband his first organizing/packet cubes (from Ikea) this summer and he loved them!! Thank you Jen for beeing such an adorable person !

  9. Thanks for sharing, I have enjoyed many of your blogs and videos especially the life planner and Filofax series. I have lots of ideas that I am currently implementing at my home because of you! You’re very professional, easy to listen to and I have found many of your ideas useful for myself and my family. With 3 older children, it can be difficult to keep the house neat and orderly but the ideas I have used so far have been very successful and even my kids are using their own planners to keep their personal and school life organized! Thank you for making my life a little easier! Looking forward to more videos and blogs!

  10. Loved the video! I need to hire you to pack for my summer vacations!

I am currently using a big red fabric suitcase from American Tourister that I bought at Walmart in a set. I would have never considered a hard sided suitcase but after seeing how yours held up it makes sense. No more fabric stains or cuts due to airport baggage handling!

  11. Hi Jen,
Thank you for sharing info abt EC suitcase and planner too.. But I love your bright pink tote that you carry with.. Did it has name brand? I try find right size of tote from my arm to armpit comfortable but I saw your seem right of ur arm and armpit perfect..
    Have a good day!

  12. Hi Jen! Thanks for review. Please do packing video for Your Italy trip! I went there on m honeymoon (1996)! Would live to go again someday! I do remember my suitcase being too heavy and having to lug it everywhere and on trains. I wished I had packed lighter and had a lighter suitcase, but that was before new and improved fabrics for suitcases! Also, you might want to check out Travel Fashion Girl blog. It is a great resource for packing lists and advice! I love your bloopers! I am leaving for WDW Sunday and have been reviewing your Disney videos!

  13. This was a great video I hope you do a packing for winter. most packing videos are for summer an it be great to to see a winter packing video.

    1. That’s an interesting point. Normally we travel to either warm places in the winter or come to Utah where we don’t really have to pack much for. Next time I go on a wintery trip I will be sure to film a video!

  14. I first learned about packing cubes from watching your videos. All I can think is where have these things been all of my life. Love watching the packing videos, seasonal decorating and organizing vids, as well as your vlogs. Thanks for sharing.

  15. I tried packing cubes for the first time, and they’re awesome. How did I ever live without them before? Even great for around the house, vehicle, garage, etc.

Thanks for hosting this giveaway. I think it’s very selfless of you to use your residuals from referrals to give back!

  16. Jen, thanks so much for this post! As always, I just love your travel organization, and I especially love the Erin Condren luggage, available right now, or not. Thank you for all the love you put into your posts, so details and wonderful for visual people like me. You’re just great! Thank you again.

  17. I am such a fan of the pack-it cubes and I have them in various colors according to content (blue for cosmetics, black for clothing) and I love using them for our corporate gym. My nephew used them for Japan and I’ve been hooked..:-)

  18. Hi Jen! I loved your review video on this bag. It even made me interested in buying a hard shell suitcase myself! I have this new current obsession with vintage trunk suitcases. My family and I live in Florida and we take frequent trips to the beach, which these trunks work just fine (I would NOT recommend air travel with one, as they are difficult to carry and don’t allow much storage). But none the less, I was drawn to the beautiful vintage look of them. My family and I are traveling to San Francisco later this year and I don’t currently have luggage that is up to the task. This video inspired me to look into hard shell suitcases for our trip! Thanks so much 🙂

    1. Old fashioned trunks like that are very romantic…but I can see how they may be better suited for retro travel like by train or ship. 😉

  19. Once again great video. Love the bag. I have not flown since 1999 dude to debilitating anxiety issues. I recently became a housewife and am focusing a lot of my time in overcoming this. Your travel videos inspire me so much. Hoping to get better and have an opportunity to use such a lovely bag! Thanks again for the inspiration.

  20. HEY Jen….I love the suitcase and too bad the larger ones are not being sold…boo! Thanks for having such a great giveaway!!! Hugs from Texas!

  21. Thank you for introducing me to Erin Condren amazingness!! Her designs and products are amazing, and you do such a great job promoting them, and giving us an idea of how easy it is to use them!

  22. I’m determined to purchase some packing cubes before we leave for our trip in December. I’ve been wanting some for awhile now!

  23. Discovered packing cubes from watching your video. Just used them on our 7 night cruise and they worked great! Have had my eye on these suitcases since they came out just haven’t been able to afford one yet. Hoping to get some credits saved up to put towards one! Love EC products. I have the life planner, teacher planner, functional family along with various stationary items.

Can’t wait to see the Italy packing videos.

  24. Hi Jen! I found this review and video interesting! My favourite part of the video were the bloopers! I, too, have a spinner suitcase that I received 2 years ago, as a birthday gift. I absolutely love the wheels and it’s also very lightweight! BTW, thank you so much for your help with my computer decisions. After loads of consideration, research, reviews and careful decision-making, I told my grandparents and my parents last night, that I wanted to get the MacBook Air (I’m getting either the 11″ or 13″) because of how functional and lightweight it is. However, I would like to get a “shell covering” for it as well as a zippered case for class and travel but I’m confused with what to buy, so if you and other readers have any helpful tips and suggestions for this, I would really appreciate it!
    Best regards,

  25. I’ve been using my Rick Steves bag since my first trip to London. It seems like a middle road between completely soft-sided, but it isn’t a hard sided suitcase — I’ve never tried hard-sided luggage. The one down-side on my RS bag is it’s really showing it’s age now after 3 trips overseas plus domestic travel over the last 9 years, and it doesn’t move as nicely as my son’s which has the better wheel system.

  26. I recently purchased a hard shell carry-on and packing bags from E-Bags….before I saw this video review. I will be packing for a short trip by myself tomorrow and appreciated some of your packing tips. This will be the first time I use the packing cubes, but ordered them based on some of your other videos. I have a mission trip planned in November to Guatemala and want to bring lots of give-away items for the villagers. Now I realize I really WANT ther large “overseas” hardshell for that trip!!! Thank Jen.

  27. I’m so glad I found you on YouTube. I have loved watching your videos and love your style, honest commentary and upbeat personality! I have been wanting to change up my yearly planner and haven’t decided on which one to go with but after watching your videos I know an Erin Condren planner will be a good fit for me. Thanks for all you do!

    1. I’ve only been on one cruise and that was quite a few years ago now, but I believe packing for it can be very similar for packing for a land destination of similar climate.

  28. I can’t remember ever using anything but soft sided suitcases. For some reason I worry about the durability of the hard cases. Thanks for your thorough review.

  29. I love your packing videos, I have a bit of a packing obsession, since watching your videos, and I always look forward to travelling (mainly for work) so I can get the packing cubes out! Some of the lovely things you show in your videos are hard to get hold of in the UK, but I’m quite determined and have managed to obtain most of the one’s I really like! Keep the vids coming xxx

  30. Thank you so such for all the amazing amount of informative organization! My first time here and definitely not my last. I have also have Kristina Werner to thank for introducing me to your wonderful site.

  31. Would you consider showing how you prepared to be away from home for an extended period of time? When we travel I take on a majority of the responsibilities including getting the house ready to be empty for a few weeks. When we are going to be gone for more than just a weekend I have someone check-in to ease my mind. Thanks!

  32. I love this whole packing cube thing, I really must invest in some I’ve been using big ziplock bags for years and then after a while I need to toss them. Thanks for the review as usual Jen!

  33. After viewing your video on packing the EC hardshell, I will from now on pack using those little cubes. I have never seen that before and love it!!!! Thanks for sharing.
