New Posting Plan | Spring 2015

Hello, friends!  I’ve considered experimenting with a posting plan for awhile now.  I tried a posting schedule out last spring (this seems to be a spring theme for me) and it didn’t really pan out.  I’ve hesitated to try again since then because I’ve been uncertain about the regularity of my content, but I’ve gained so much momentum after condensing down to one YouTube channel a couple of months ago, so that’s not really an issue at the moment.  I have loads of new content ideas I’m excited to share over the next couple of months so there’s really no better time than the present to give it a go.

I’m sharing a look at my desk right at this moment (I literally snapped this picture from my phone right before posting) with no tidying up or edits.  I am doing this, because I believe that the state of my desk (and office and house in general) is an accurate reflection of the state of my mind.  As you can see, my desk is not a jumbled mess, but it could be more organized and tidier.  Same with my brain!  Whenever I start to feel brain clutter creep in I like to develop a stratagem to help me better manage my time.  This usually involves implementing some kind of structure.  This process may not work for everyone, but it’s my go-to brain fixer upper that sweeps away the clutter before it can really take hold.

I have felt so energized lately with my content and the direction my videos and blog posts are taking.  I have so much I want to share in any given week, but it feels like there just isn’t enough time in the day to fit everything in.  I get so excited about what I’m working on that I’m losing balance in my personal time.  As much as I relish time spent with my loved ones, lately I’ve missed a few things in order to work on my content.  Making dedicated time for my family and friends is one of the top priorities in my life and I’d like to continue to honor that.  I also strongly believe in the importance of taking care of myself in the ways that feed my soul, which also requires time out of the day.  I feel like experimenting with adding a bit more defined structure to my posting schedule might allow me to share a good amount of content each week and hopefully restore balance in my personal life.  Additionally, this might help me to do more work in advance so I can have content ready to go each week and avoid the pre-post/video scramble I am not so fond of.  Scrambling leads to a messy desk and, you guessed it, brain clutter.

So, here’s what I’m proposing: I am going to run a 6-8 week experiment with using a content plan.  I decided against using the word “schedule,” because I want this process to feel flexible and open to tinkering.  Also, I hate making promises about posts or videos that I can’t always keep, due to life getting in the way.  In calling it a plan, this new order feels comfortable in that it will provide some much needed structure for me at the moment without the rigidity of certain expectations.  This is the plan, as of right now:

✻ Monday – No content

✻ Tuesday – Week In Review blog post & Vlog/Tag/Chit Chat style video

✻ Wednesday  – Optional beauty/product review blog post

✻ Thursday – Beauty/Product/Stuff I Like blog post & video

✻ Friday – Optional Organization/Home/Travel blog post

✻ Saturday – Organization/Home/Travel blog post & video

✻ Sunday – Optional Book Nook blog post

This plan is subject to change of course, but I wanted to give you the rundown and reasonings behind it, so a) you can be in the know, and b) you can help me see how my experiment works.  Your feedback is super important to me and I always value your opinions on my content.  I’ll keep you posted if I decide this isn’t working for me and want to try something different.  In the event that I stick to it for the next two months or so I’ll check in again and we can chat about how you feel about it and plans for the future.  Please keep in mind that while I certainly hope to follow this plan, sometimes I might have to make adjustments based on what else is happening.  That’s just life, though, and we’re all familiar with how things sometimes just don’t go to plan.

Ok, I feel like I’ve said the word “plan” about a thousand times, so I’m going to end this here.  Thanks, as always, for your continued support and enthusiasm for what I do.  I can’t wait to keep sharing with you!  See you tomorrow 🙂

  1. I think allow yourself the opportunity to do the thing you love with those you is a great starting point. As I have learned over time, you are a sharing person with a lot of feedback, good and bad. It can become overwhelming fairly fast. So I think you should make a plan alongside a timeline and revisit the list and schedule and make it work for you for the next timeline. Here is to you and trying new things that will make you happy.

      1. I am happy you got it even with the missing words. Trying to be encouraging on a cell phone while cleaning is not my talent 🙂 but it was worth sharing with you because you are such a kind person that inspires.

  2. Sounds like a great, dare I say, plan! Maybe you could slip in a Cook Nook segment or a Pinspired project sometime, too. Looking forward to what you’ll be sharing next! =D

  3. Hi Jen,

Thank you for all your nice content! It’s always a joy to see or read your stories. Sometimes it feels just as if we are long time friends… Ofcourse i know that you don’t know me and that i’m just one of many followers. But thank you for the feeling of having a fried in the USA!

Your ‘friend’ in the Netherlands, Judith…

  4. Hi Jen, It sounds like a great plan. Its super healthy to have “you time”. I know exactly what you mean by brain clutter, for me it gives me stress and i can’t sleep right, so in fact if you feed your soul you also will be healthier physically and mentally. Which in turn will be better quality time for family and friends. Just remember to “turn the page” if or when the plan goes wrong, don’t let it bother you, just move on. Just like you said life happens and before you know it your making a new plan, this happens to all of us. Thanks for sharing. Have a fantastic day! Take care, Danette

  5. Hi Jen,

I am a new subscriber to your YouTube channel. I am looking forward to seeing your post. Your down to earth personality and your postiive attitude radiates through your work and posts. I am very excited to join your world and look forward to learning more from you. I am the process of creating plans for my family as we have many big things going on over the next year. Here is to HAPPY PLANNING!!!! 🙂

  6. I aspire to someday have a job where 3 days a week are optional. More power to you, but maybe it’s time to start referring to this as a hobby instead of an occupation?

    1. When what I do occupies the majority of my waking hours, I believe it’s appropriate to call it an occupation.

    2. Just because she’s only posting content a few days of the week doesn’t mean she’s not working the rest of the time. How do you think the content appears, magically? It takes time and effort to assemble videos, publish them, promote them, etc.

      1. I work in communications. If I only produced three products a week, I would have been fired a long time ago and would not be nearly as popular with my clients…

        1. I’m not sure it works to compare what I do to put up my content to what you do with your work in communications since they’re not the same thing.

    3. I wish people would stop Jen-bashing. If she calls it a hobby people complain, if she calls it an occupation people complain. Does it REALLY make that much difference? It is what it is, take from it what you need to and move on. She works so hard on here and takes so much pride in her work – yes work. That’s all.

  7. Hi Jen! I think your plan sounds really great! I love the direction you have chosen to go with your videos! I have been watching all of your channels for a very long time, and still go back to some of your older videos too when I am looking for ideas or inspiration with something particular, as sometimes I have some “How would Jen do this” moments! 😉 Thank you for continuing to share all that you do with all of us! Watching your videos is like connecting with a friend for me, I think because I have been watching for so long, and even when I am having a not so good day, I always feel better after seeing your videos!
Sending you hugs from Ohio! 🙂

  8. Hi Jen!

I always enjoy your posts no matter what they about or how often you post. Enjoy your family and also yourself! My immediate family passed away very suddenly in a short period of time so I have embraced my extended family and enjoyed myself in what I like and love to do! Thanks for sharing your journey. God bless you, Don and of course Winnie, who I always LOVE to see and hear about! Thanks again!

    1. I hope the same for you! Life is a constant balancing act. The trick is knowing everything changes and being flexible. 🙂

  9. Jen you should do whatever is comfortable for you, family and friends should always come first, life is so short and you don’t want to miss any opportunities of sharing time with them or having FUN! Your followers will stick around and enjoy whatever content you care to share. :). I myself enjoy your channel and plan on sticking around.

  10. That plan only gives you one day a week “off”. Surely, you are deserving of two? Love everything and glad you are still with us! 🙂

    1. I actually have been using Friday lately as my day “off” even though I generally post on that day. I try to prepare my content ahead of time and hope to get even better at doing that with the new posting plan.

  11. Hi, Jen! I used to comment way back when you first started this blog. Can’t believe that was 2 years ago! Anyway… I have a question: In your plan, will you be doing vlogging again? I love your vlogs; they are so much fun to watch. Have a great evening!

    1. Yes, I have been vlogging and plan on continuing when I have something fun to share. Those videos will go up on Tuesdays.

  12. Hi Jen, so funny that you are posting this today because this morning I was thinking I needed a similar *plan* (like the term!) for my own blog. It really is challenging to fit it all in. And getting ahead of the schedule (I mean plan) is also a challenge! Good luck on sticking to yours as much as feasible. I have been reading a lot about branding lately and the big message seems to be that consistency is key. I think keeping a regular posting plan is good not only for the readers’ engagement, but for the blogger’s sanity too!

    1. I agree! Sometimes you can’t always stick to your plan, but having one helps with consistency in general for sure. Good luck with your blogging adventure!

  13. Hi Jen, I’m so looking forward to your new schedule and your re-branding. I just love your blog and youtube channel. You have inspired me to do youtube. I have had my blog for a while, but watching your videos helped me get the courage to do my own. Keep it up! You have a friend and supporter in Newfoundland, Canada.

  14. Its always nice to have a plan but dont overwhelm yourself, that leads to anxiety and frustration! Just keep in mind were here for you always. Family and a social life come first, you-tube second!

  15. Personally I think that it is too much … Two blog posts and two videos would be enough for a week! I love your content but you don’t have to force yourself ! Enjoy life ! All these videos/Posts take much time, energy, which you could spend for you. Time is money! Quality is better than quatity !

    1. I just feel so energized and have so much to share lately, it feels right to me at the moment. That’s not to say it won’t shift or change with time, but for now I’m going for it 🙂

  16. I your plan and how it all moved to one channel and provides many different types of videos. I was just wondering if you might do a organizational tips video for those living in a smaller space like a apartment or condo or if you had any good tips . Also if your looking for you tubers with cool video content daily bumps is pretty cute and does an great intro

  17. Hello Jen,

I love to see bit and pieces of your home as you work around….
I have 2 kids, and my place is a bit worse (just a little bit…)
Our bureau is used to dump papers, lost toys, anything that needs to be fixed,…

I try to keep everything and the rooms tidy, but not every day…

But how you keep your stuff organised or ‘used’, that inspires me to keep my home as tidy as possible.
Please keep posting pictures or video’s that keeps me inspired to tidy up 😉

thanks and have a nice day
    your friend from Belgium 🙂

  18. I think this is great! Ever since I started a schedule of posting twice a week on specific days on my blog I feel much more organized and content with it and want to have at least one week in advance scheduled posts, just in case something comes up and I can’t dedicate as much time to it as I would like 🙂

  19. Hey Jen! As a viewer, I’m glad that you don’t feel pressured to post. As much as I’d love to have a video from you everyday, that’s not a fair expectation or possible when you have a life outside of your youtube and blog. This “plan” sounds great and I’m excited to see and read your content as you move forward with this.

  20. Hi Jen

I am looking forward to see any content you post and I have found about a few beauty and skincare items you have mentioned and I have tried them and l love them like the soap and glory and for the first time this week I have tried the micellar cleansing water and love it as my part of my skincare routine . Good luck with the posting plan and I love Winnie she is lovely

  21. One of the best things I ever did with my blog was to pick specific days that the content is to go up on. I post Mon/Wed/Fri, occasionally I’ll do a Sunday post or, as I’m doing right now, an almost daily posting challenge for the month. I have a little blogging notebook that I plan all my posts in, so I know what I need to be working on and when it needs to be ready to go live. This has helped me tenfold when it comes to balancing my blog, my friends, family, day job and me time!

That feeling when you get the balance just right is pretty euphoric! You’ll find it, I’m sure! 🙂
