Maternity & Newborn Photo Shoots

It’s always been a dream of mine to have beautiful professional photographs of my newborn to commemorate such a special time.  I started searching for a professional photographer who specialized in newborn photos early on in my pregnancy as I knew they have a tendency to book up well in advance.  I lucked out the day Don & I went to have an elective ultrasound done at 16 weeks and I saw the amazing work of local photographer Sri hanging on the walls.  One look at his online portfolio and I was sold!

After perusing Sri’s work, I decided to book him not only for our newborn shoot, but also for a maternity shoot, as well.  These are his two specialties and he is amazing at both kinds of shoots!  He works with his wife, Jana, who styles the shoots.  Together they make a great team.  Don & I are both pretty awkward when it comes to having our pictures taken and they made us feel so comfortable on both shoots and were able to capture these special times in our lives beautifully.

Maternity Photo Shoot

This is my favorite image from our maternity photo shoot last fall.  We met up at a local forest preserve on a beautiful, crisp autumn day with the last of the turning leaves on the trees.  I love Sri’s work with light in these photos!

We decided to bring our dog, Winnie, to the shoot since I hoped to use the photos on our holiday card and wanted to include our entire (then) little family of three. The photo on the left is my favorite picture of me and Winnie ever!  I also love the cute bump shot we took with Winnie and Don peeking over my belly.  Jana was a wiz at posing us for the best shots.

Sri did an amazing job capturing our love for each other and our joyful anticipation for the arrival of our little one.  We hope to go back to the same location in the fall with our daughter Charlotte to take family portraits once again.

Newborn Photo Shoot

As much as I love our maternity photos, the newborn shots Sri took really showcase his talent.  This is where Sri’s work shines the most!  My favorite shot from the bunch (above) depicts little Charlotte’s angelic features and sweetness so perfectly.  It takes my breath away every time I look at it!

Although it was a bit of a challenge to haul the family downtown when Charlotte was just nine days old and I was still quite tender from surgery, it was well worth the effort.  We went to Sri & Jana’s studio which they have set up with babies in mind.  They keep it warm and cozy so that babies can remain comfortable and sleepy for the best shots.  They provided all of the props and accessories, which made it super easy for me as a new Mommy.  How sweet are these shots?

We also opted to take some family portraits.  Sri worked his magic again, somehow making us look like people who take good photos (seriously…we usually don’t) and who had slept some (seriously…we had not!).  I love the shot of Don kissing his little girl.  She’s such a little sweetie!

maternity newborn comparison shot

Something fun that Sri & Jana came up with was to add a “Made With Love” tag in both our maternity and newborn shoots for a then and now comparison.  Check out that little smile!  I think Charlotte knows how loved she is.

Check out Sri’s website to see his incredible work.  It’s fun to see even if you’re not in the market for these types of photos.  If you are and are local to Chicago I highly recommend Sri & Jana for incredible maternity and newborn photos!

holiday card birth announcement

I chose my favorites from both shoots for our holiday cards and birth announcements by Tiny Prints, my go-to website for custom photo cards.  Their online software is easy to use to customize cards.  I love how you can order special envelope liners, which are super easy to assemble.  I also ordered custom stamps through the site for Charlotte’s birth announcement for a special extra touch.  Both cards turned out exactly how I’d hoped and I couldn’t be more happy with them.

I hope you enjoyed this look at our maternity and newborn professional photos.  I look forward to continuing a tradition of having professional family portraits taken every year, not just for our annual holiday cards, but as sweet keepsakes.  Family is everything! ❤️

  1. I love the photo with the smile! I think that and the family portraits are my favorite. These are really beautiful, Jen. No doubt they’ll be treasured by your family for years.

  2. These pictures are amazing! Sri and Jana have such incredible talent! I think maternity/new born shoots are certainly a more American thing, it’s not that big (yet) here in the UK but after seeing these and looking through more of Sri’s work, oh I can see myself wanting pictures like this when I start a family! They say a hell of a lot more than a few grainy selfies that seems to be more of the done thing these days!

    Beautiful family photos <3

  7. So very precious. All of the photos are great. Don with his sweet girl is so special and you and Winnie together is so cute. Great job Ross family!!!

  8. The photos are really beautiful, especially those of Charlotte (that smiley photo!) and the one you favor with the just the two of you with the autumn leaves. I am going to offer the opinion that I’m not fond of how they cropped the photos in which you are without your head – both the individual shot (“made with love”) and the one with Don and Winnie; I’ve art directed photo shoots professionally and would have not made that decision especially with such an attractive subject. That said, I’m happy for you having made the choice to capture and preserve this precious moments. They fly by so quickly.

  9. These are absolutely stunning Jen. Such gorgeous memories to cherish forever now. She is absolutely gorgeous and such a pretty little baby. My two looked like little frogs at that age but have grown into very beautiful looking kids…..thank god! hehehehe

  10. Oh my…These are so precious and so private. Thank you for sharing them with us. They are all beautiful, but the one of Don kissing her little head made my eyes very misty. There is nothing like a Daddy watching over his little girl with such love. Of course a mother’s tender love is equally noted…Each picture is just beautiful. Love the one of you and Winnie too.

  11. These are PRICELESS! Absolutely gorgeous! These pictures brings so much joy for your family! So happy for you, Don, and CC. 😊

  12. Jen, all of your photos are beautiful. I think it is so wonderful that this generation does these photo shoots. I am sure I don’t have to say….Buy them all ! It is impossible to pick out just a few favorites. I am so happy you share your sweet baby photos with us. Hugs from friends in Kansas.

  13. The photo’s are beautiful, but I have to agree with The Scarlett. Also, I know you love Winnie, but why is she not in any of the photo’s with you and Don? She is family too, and I thought it very sad. You took pictures with her while pregnant, but once the baby was here, there is no Winnie, too bad, she would have been so cute in the family photo’s.

  14. I love the photo shoot’s especially the one of you holding your belly any winni looking up. Also the one with done and cc is precius. Have you seen the month by month photo frames. We have them at crafts direct here and I think you can find them online as well. You can get the book ,or square frame though my favorite is the photo letter where you can do month or weekly pictures for the first year or two if you do month to month. It’s a neat way to see all the changes in the first year. And it fun to see it in the intial formate.

  15. Jen you look absolutely AMAZING. Don is just beaming with pride and Charlotte is so precious. Isn’t it amazing how God gives you this amazing little human that was made just for you? Such a miracle. What a beautiful family you have.

  16. Jen those photos are absolutely adorable! No we can’t call them photos…..they are called memories captured for life! What a beautiful family you have. So so extremely happy for you, Don, Charlotte and Winnie!!! Xxxx

  19. How cute! All pictures turned out so pretty, so great! I’m a bit scared when it comes to maternity shoots, when the moms go almost naked to show off the belly…but yours turned out so pretty! I love Charlotte pictures as well, very cute and delicate. She’s so pretty! The pic where she smiles is precious! Don looks great on the pics! Really loved it your photo shoot. Congrats, Jen, on such a pretty family!

  20. It is hard to pick a favorite photo of this family because they are all so beautiful and princess Charlotte is the center of it all. Pretty neat is what I say!!

  21. *Crying* maybe it’s the hormones, but I’m over here tearing up. The photo of you and Don with the sunlight in the background invokes such an emotion. I’m so glad you were able to find someone to capture such perfect moments.
