Maternity Haul | 1st & 2nd Trimesters

I wanted to share about the transitional and maternity clothing I’ve purchased over the course of my pregnancy so far.  I’m just 17 weeks now, but I’ve already found tried and true pieces that have carried me through the past couple of months and others that I’m looking forward to wearing for the remainder of my second trimester.  This includes every day items I rotate through in my wardrobe from workout gear to casual wear.

All image sources that are not originally my own photos are from the links provided below.  Please be advised that some of the links provided are affiliate links and I do receive a small commission if you make a purchase using those links.  This does not cost you any extra when you make a purchase.  I very much appreciate your support of this blog in doing so!

first trimester transitional clothing 2015

I was fortunate to feel pretty well during my first trimester, although I did experience major bloating throughout the entire period.  I started wearing my loosest clothing to conceal the bloat since it was still so early in my pregnancy and I didn’t want anyone outside of my immediate family to know just yet.  I purchased a few layering pieces in larger sizes as well as comfy, roomy t-shirts to wear when traveling to supplement my wardrobe.  These items still work for me in my second trimester as well.

Around 5-6 weeks I started getting terrible belly aches whenever I was out of the house.  It took me a surprisingly long time to make the connection that my pre-pregnancy pants were the culprit.  At 7 weeks I bit the bullet and decided to buy a few pairs of maternity pants.  This ended up being one of the best decisions I made during my first trimester as the amazing belly band attached to the new pants allowed for me to leave the house without pain.  I’m so happy I purchased these items even if it seemed a bit on the early side, because I’ve gotten so much use out of them already!

The other part of my wardrobe I needed to update very early on in my pregnancy was my bras.  I went up an entire size within a week of my positive pregnancy test!  I sized up in my pre-pregnancy favorite, Victoria’s Secret Body By Victoria Perfect Coverage Bra.  This swap has carried me through so far, but I anticipate possibly needing to size up again before all is said and done.

I also decided to make adjustments to my workout clothing options early on in my pregnancy.  I purchased a couple pairs of shorts in a larger size to accommodate the first trimester bloat as well as several loose fitting inexpensive tanks from Target for comfort and concealment.  Of course, I also needed to size up in my sports bras.  Towards the end of my first trimester, it became clear I could no longer comfortably wear my pre-pregnancy yoga legging capris, so I purchased an amazing pair from Nordstrom that I absolutely love.  I also recently bought a knee length pair and a super soft yoga top to hopefully carry me through the rest of my pregnancy.

second trimester clothing haul 2015

I’ve been able to wear a lot of the tops and dresses I purchased this spring up until this point, but now that I’m well into my second trimester it’s becoming apparent that those days are numbered.  We’re only halfway through the warm weather season here in the midwest, so I knew I’d need some pieces to carry me through until the fall chill settles in.

I’ve shopped for maternity wear mostly at Destination Maternity up until this point, which has served my needs for the most part when it comes to basics, but I haven’t been able to find the style of tops and dresses I prefer.  I was so happy when the nice folks at Pink Blush Maternity reached out to me as I’d never heard of that shop before.  They very kindly offered to send me a few items of my choice (marked with an asterisk* below).  I like them so much I purchased several more myself.  I’ll definitely be shopping there again when fall rolls around.

  1. I shop at Old Navy a lot because I live in a small town and we dont have any other maternity options locally. I have a few GAP and H&M staple pieces I love as well!

  2. Don’t forget to start thinking about nursing friendly pajamas! I loved Gilligan & O’Malley Women’s Fluid Knit Top and Short Pajama Sets! I lived in those tops when I got home from the hospital and didn’t have much in the nursing top department.

  3. A lot of the kids consignment shops and seasonal sales carry maternity items, so that’s where I normally shop for maternity clothes. I didn’t like Target’s fit, and Destination Maternity closed their local shop.

  4. I just wanted to say congratulations! You look beautiful and glowing. I watch so much I feel like you are a wonderful cyber friend. As for the topic at hand, I did a lot of maternity shopping on QVC of all places. Lori Goldstein has a wonderful line of tunic shirts, rights and scarves. Pregnancy clothing shopping is not always enjoyable. It’s nice to do it from home with your feet up.

  5. Jen, you mentioned a cami for layering, they are not maternity specific but the skinny tee may be something you could look into. QVC and Amazon carry these.

  6. Hi Jen! I always found great pieces in the Liz Lange for Target line. They have another line online only called BeMaternity and have the camis that are just maternity (not for nursing). I found all the maternity items I bought at target to be really great quality. I had a Late December due date and also had a hard time finding a coat I liked so I ended up just wearing my regular coat through to the end…it was a Banana Republic wool coat that happened to be an a-line style and it was a little snug but it definitely worked. I decided they probably don’t make very many maternity coats because at 8 or 9 months pregnant you are so hot all the time you don’t even want a coat!! 😀

    1. Thanks for the tips about the Target things. And that’s a good point about being hot even in winter! I tend to run cold, even now in summer, but I can see how things start to heat up with that belly furnace running 24/7 😉

  7. Yay!like I mentioned under the beautiful haul you shared..the clothes are so great!
    loved he video!
    Thank you for the giveaway!
It s so awesome from you..

  8. I usually shop thrift stores for my maternity clothes. I am not currently expecting but would love to be able to win something new for our next pregnancy.

  9. All your clothing picks are just beautiful, I wish when I was pregnant (19 years ago!) had that kind of choices lol.
You look beautiful girl, continue taking care of yourself as good as you have done it right now.
    Hugs 🙂

  10. I am so upset I didnt hear about pinkblushmaternity before! I just passed my due date (yesterday) and most of the clothes there are so affordable and would have been perfect for work and day to day..

Hmm… I guess just need to keep them in mind for the next pregnancy <3 Thanks for sharing!

Congrats again, I am an avid follower of you and tiffanyd and love seeing you share parts of the pregnancy journey with the rest of us.

    Much love always !~

  11. I always got nauseous when my pants were too tight. You were smart to start wearing pants do soon. I wore sweater dresses with leggings or nicer black yoga pants. Very comfortable. Eventually you’ll be uncomfortable no matter what you wear, do enjoy the cute clothes now.

  12. I bumped into you somewhere, and got hooked on watching your videos and finally signed up for your blogs! So interesting! I love so many of the things you are sharing. Your clothes purge , following Marie Kondo was amazing and inspiring! 😊

  13. If you are looking for a nice maternity dress that you can wear even post pregnancy, I recommend Isabella Oliver. I have three dresses and I still wear them for work and date night.

  14. Hi Jen: I was wondering what you were going to do when the weather gets very cold? Are you going to purchase a maternity coat or an extender for your wardrobe of coats? My very new company has an extender that clips onto any coat that has a zipper. Any kind of zipper and any length coat. I would like to send you an extendher for you to try out. It is a maternity extender that also is a Babywearing cover for when you have your little one in a front carrier. Once you clip it on, you simply zip in and out of your coat as you normally would. Are you interested in trying it and keeping it for good a free extendher? I hope you will. Joanne Frank.

    1. I’ve actually already purchased a coat, but thanks for thinking of me! Wishing you all the best with your new business 🙂
