Lifestyle Favorites | October 2015

October has come and gone in a flash!  It’s been a great month filled with beautiful weather and fun times with loved ones.  I’m excited to share some of my favorite things from the past month with you, ranging from clothing, accessories, and beauty items to home goods, multi-media picks, and food.

All image sources that are not originally my own photos are from the links provided below.  Please be advised that some of the links provided are affiliate links and I do receive a small commission if you make a purchase using those links.  This does not cost you any extra when you make a purchase.  I very much appreciate your support of this blog in doing so!

Clothes & Accessories

❊ Wendy Bellisimo Maternity Anorak – I knew I was going to need a lightweight jacket for early fall to accommodate my growing preggo belly.  I am extremely happy with this cargo green anorak jacket I found at Destination Maternity.  It’s the perfect weight for layering and a great color for fall.

Henri Bendel Jetsetter Mini Convertible Backpack – If you’ve been following my favorites posts this year, then you’ve heard me swoon over this bag twice already, as I have it in both black and a periwinkle blue.  I was going to switch back into the black for fall when I saw the beautiful new gold color they’re currently stocking.  A too-good-to-pass-up coupon to Henri Bendel in my mailbox sealed the deal!  If you’d like to see more details about this bag, check out my Bag Buzz post on it.

Beauty

❊ Becca Ombre Rouge Eye Palette – I received this pretty palette in the Popsugar Must Have Special Edition Box for Fall.  The warm, neutral shades are right up my alley!  These shadows pack a powerful punch with great pigmentation.  I especially love the deeper plum tone.

❊ bareMinerals READY Eyeshadow 4.0 in The Truth – I’ve had this palette for several years now and always come back to it in the spring and fall.  It includes such a beautiful collection of taupe-based shades!  I’ve been pairing it with the Becca palette for the past month.

❊ Mineral Fusion Lipstick Butter in Ripe – This has been my one and only lippie for the past 6 weeks.  It took a little time to work it in, but now it applies like a dream!  I like this warm, brown-toned neutral for fall.

❊ Bite Beauty Opal Lip Gloss – I enjoy pairing light-toned glosses over deeper colors from time to time.  This pretty, opalescent shade pairs beautifully with the Mineral Fusion lipstick butter.  It can come off a bit white, so I just apply a tiny bit to the center of my lips then blot for a nice glowy effect.

Home Goods

october 2015 favorites home goodsI get a lot of questions about our bedding since I film quite a few videos in our bedroom.  I like to change my duvet cover, shams, and quilt seasonally, which not only acts as a nice refresh for our room four times a year but also helps to extend the life of the bedding.  About 90% of what I use I purchased from Pottery Barn anywhere from 8-10+ years ago.  I can certainly attest to the quality of their decorative bedding!

I originally purchased the current duvet cover and matching shams we have out from Pottery Barn and the quilt from Restoration Hardware about 10 years ago when we lived in our first home together, a condo.  It went really well with the decor of our bedroom there.  I didn’t feel as if it matched the wedgewood blue wall color we had originally painted in our house when we moved in 8 years ago, so I tucked it away in storage, thinking I might have a use for it down the line.  It matches our recently repainted cream-colored bedroom perfectly!  I’m on the lookout for a small square decorative pillow cover to match.

Multi-Media

october 2015 favorites multi-media

❊ Pretty Little Liars Season 5 – My husband, Don, and I have made a tradition in recent years of watching Pretty Little Liars in October.  I think it’s a fitting show for this time of year because it’s so creepy.  We’re always at least a season behind, but I enjoy watching shows in clumps like this instead of spread out over time.  PLL isn’t my favorite show ever, but I do find it entertaining and, as I mentioned, seasonally appropriate.

❊ Billy Crystal – Still Foolin’ ‘Em – Don and I finished up listening to Billy Crystal’s autobiography on a road trip down to St. Louis to visit my brother’s family last weekend.  We both really enjoyed his stories and especially his captivating delivery.  He’s extremely talented and famous, but also very relatable and down to earth.  The combination makes for an interesting read.

❊ Gabrielle Aplin – Light Up The Dark – I’ve become a Gabrielle Aplin fan this year and was quite excited for the release of her first full album.  It certainly did not disappoint!  I love her eclectic, earthy sound.

❊ Pentatonix – Pentatonix – There’s so much good new music lately and my current favorite is the new Pentatonix album.  I’ve been obsessed with this 5-person acapella group for over a year now.  Their talent, both individually and combined, astounds me!  Their new album is composed of original music.  I especially like the song “Can’t Sleep Love.”  It’s so catchy and the music video is awesome!

Tasty Treats

october 2015 favorites tasty treats❊ Love Grown Foods Power O’s – I’ve been on a big cereal kick for the first time in my life this past month and enjoy a bowl most every morning.  My favorite out of the few I’ve tried so far are Power O’s, which I buy at my local Whole Foods.  The honey flavor is so yummy!  The cereal is made from beans which adds extra protein.

Talenti Pumpkin Pie Gelato – I enjoy indulging in pumpkin-flavored treats during October and November when stores carry them as specialty seasonal items.  On a recent Whole Foods runs I happened to notice my favorite packaged gelato brand is offering a Pumpkin Pie flavor.  It is SO good!  I love that it has actual bits of pie crust in it.  I top off a cupful with a bit of whipped cream and it tastes just like frozen pumpkin pie.  Yum!

  2. Jen,
I love your October favorites video – actually all your videos are great!

You make my day when I get your video postings in my in-box.

Thank you for all your hard work!

    Warmest regards,
    Tracy

  3. This is a question about the Italy trip. Did you take any toiletries in your carry on luggage to use on the plane, like toothbrush, hand lotion, etc? How do you carry those? We are going to Okinawa in December to see kids, but stopping in SF on the way, so I wanted to take in my carry on a change of clothes and toiletries. Any ideas? I bought the train case you suggested. Will that work on carry ons?
    Thanks so much!!!

    1. I brought a few little things like that in my carry-on in a separate little case for easy access. I hope you have a great trip!

  4. Jen-I recently found flameless candles that are battery operated. I was given one as a gift. The first time you insert your battery you wait until the time of the day in which you would like the candle to turn on. Turn the candle on at that time and set it for 4 or 8 hours. From that day forward it will auto on and off at those times. Battery life last approx 3-5 months. My fall favorite for sure.

  5. I have had my eye on the jetsetter backpack since you shared your black one last year. I have been hemming & hawing & waiting for just the right color to come out. {Sidebar: I just purchased 2 of those Henri Bendal 4 piece makeup bags (which just arrived today)} & as soon as I saw your email @ 1pm-ish & saw that you had a favs vid up & saw the pic for “The Gold One,” ordered mine!!! I did not see the gold one online on Sunday!!! Swoon is right! I ordered the larger sized one though! Absolutely cannot wait for it to arrive. This will be my November bag.
Incidentally, my October bag is the Mulberry one you have. Bought 2 of those a couple years back & then the Oxblood (larger) backpack & the agenda book! Love your “content!” We have very similar tastes!
{Sidebar: & u should go for the Cambone Tote Large Chanel bag….love mine! Ha!!!!!! Thanks for sharing! Congratulations to both you & Don on “baby girl!” Based on your sincere sharing (since I don’t know you folks), I couldn’t think of a more deserving couple to have a baby! I can tell you folks will make awesome parents!!!
    ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️😌

  6. I love watching all your videos. October favorites would be making the switch to fall clothes and make up colors. I’m also starting to get excited for the upcoming holidays!

  7. great favorites video Jen. Could you share the planner easy shop again for me. I am so excited…I have my first Erin Condren on its way, and I would love to get some really cute stickers.

    Happy Halloween.

  8. My October discoveries that I will repurchase are the Almond Dream Almond Milk Frozen Bites covered in Chocolate, Halo Top Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, Trader Joe’s pumpkin biscottis, and butternut squash soup. Love Grown came out with a new bean cereal that has chocolate in it. I’m going to see if it is at my Whole Food’s. Thank you for sharing your favorites, I quite like the gold backpack, going to put on my Christmas list. Anyways have a wonderful week.

  9. My favorite this fall has been Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto Canada. It is a Miracle Network Hospital and it’s been so helpful with following up on my son. The Staff there really are the gold standard for medical care with children.

  10. Great post and video. As a Canadian living in Denmark I am missing traditional Halloween. Yet Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen puts on this incredible display and event. To visit is my October favourite. Also, I finally discovered a place that sells canned pumpkin ($8.00 a can!) So I can least make a pumpkin pie.

  11. I love the jetsetter bag and am ready to purchase one. I was just wondering if its a real ‘gold’ gold or is it a little subdued ( if that makes sense). I don’t like bright gold hardware and was wondering how brassy the hardware is. Thanks Jen! Love your videos!!
