Beauty Haul Review | Spring 2016

Hello, beauties!  I picked up some new beauty items over the past month that I’ve had some time to play with.  A few of them are sadly duds for me, but a couple have become new favorites!  I thought I’d share my thoughts on these products with you.

Please be advised that some of the links provided are affiliate links and I do receive a small commission if you make a purchase using those links.  This does not cost you any extra when you make a purchase.  I very much appreciate your support of this blog in doing so!

beauty haul review spring 2016

Erborian BB Crème – If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know I’m a big MakeupByTiffanyD fan.  I enjoy her beauty tutorials and product recommendations.  Usually when she raves about something that I decide to try, too, I enjoy it.  I picked up this CC cream after her (many) glowing reviews with high hopes.  While it does seem like a nice CC cream with great coverage, I found that it didn’t suit my now slightly drier skin.  I like to use BB or CC creams as a replacement for a daytime moisturizer so I need something that actually moisturizes.  This CC cream did not do that for my skin and I found it actually sinked into lines I didn’t even know I had and made them more pronounced.  As with any skincare product, this one might work great for another skin type, but it just didn’t work for mine as it is right now.

❊ The Balm Batter Up Long Wearing Eyeshadow Sticks – For the first time in my life I look forward to putting on a little makeup every day.  As a new Mama it makes me feel a little more pulled together, perhaps balancing out the the mom bun messy hair and spit-up stained tank tops I sport on the regular. 😉 I reached out last month asking for eyeshadow stick recommendations for quick and easy application and I purchased a few that seemed up my alley.  My absolute favorite of the bunch are the Batter Up Eyeshadow Sticks, which I mentioned in my March Favorites.  They have a nice sheen to them without being overly sparkly and great staying power.  I have the shades Shutout, a bronzey taupe and Moonshot, a cool-toned champagne.

Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour – So many people recommended the Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks I just had to give them a try.  I purchased Sugar Frost (tan beige) and Rose Gold.  While I do love these two shades, they’re a bit more sparkly than I like for everyday use.  They glide on smoothly, but have a tendency to crease a bit by the end of the day.  I still enjoy them, but The Balm’s version is by far my favorite of the two.

Perricone MD No Eyeshadow Eyeshadow – I went through a phase with the Perricone No Lipstick Lipstick awhile back (thinking about it makes me want to pull it out again even though I haven’t been wearing lip color every day) that made me curious about the rest of the line.  I decided to give the No Eyeshadow Eyeshadow a go.  It reminds me of my favorite bareMinerals 5-in-1 BB Advanced Performance Cream Eyeshadow that I like to wear as a base underneath powder eyeshadows, although it’s a bit sheerer and more wet of a formula.  To be honest it doesn’t really alter the look of my eyelids much, but I have been using it as a base from time to time.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara – I like to try different mascaras every once in awhile and I picked this one up on a whim one day.  I’ve had good luck with Maybelline mascaras in the past, but this one was a total dud for me.  It’s a super wet formula, which doesn’t work well with my fine lashes.  I felt that it was much too clumpy because of this.  I normally use products I’ve purchased even if they’re not my favorite so as not to waste them, but this mascara is one of the exceptions to that rule for me.

MAC Prep & Prime Highlighter (not pictured) – I used and loved Mac’s Prep & Prime Vibrancy Eye Primer for years (sadly no longer available) so I thought I’d try out their highlighter hoping for a similar experience.  I chose the shade Radiant Rose to add some light to my under eye area.  The product is easy to apply and blend but it somehow finds its way to the fine lines right underneath my eyes even though I’m careful not to apply it there.  It’s not too terrible, so I’ll continue using it, but I wish it would stay put better.  I’m still on the hunt for a great under eye highlighting concealer and would love your recommendations if you care to share!

Let me know if you like this kind of beauty haul review post as I’d be happy to share more like it in the future.  I’d love to know if you’ve picked up any new beauty goodies this spring and what you think about them, good or bad!

  1. Hi Jen! I am really loving that your back on snapchat! It’s part of my everyday ritual to check for your snaps! You always brighten my day. I have been a huge fan and follower of yours for many years and I admire you so much!

  2. Hi Jen, I was wondering the name of the BM paint you used in your bedroom? I have a spare room in my place that I’d like to paint and wanted to use a “beigey”color just like that. Thanks!

  3. Hi Jen!

I’ll definitly try The Balm Eyeshadow sticks after your review on them 🙂 They sound really nice and more so easy to use if you just want to, as you described it, look more put together.

Hope you and your family are doing great and that you are enjoying the nice spring weather. (Over here in Sweden where I live it’s been raining for a week straight D’: )

  4. Jen, I look forward to your reviews. It is a great way to get a good opinion on the products out there. I have taken your advice for many years now and you have never steered me wrong. My favorite will always be your chocolate chip cookies. Still making them.

  5. Hi Jen,

Excited to see a new beauty haul today and love reading & learning about all the products. I have also been following you for years now & love seeing your updates. So sad I can’t get Snapchat on my Windows phone in the UK 🙁 Gonna have to get me an iPhone! Congratualations to you & Don too – CC is just gorgeous x

  6. always happy to see what you are up to! I totally agree about the Maybelline waterproof mascara. Didn’t work at all for me.

  7. I picked up a B&BW Aloha Waterfall Orchid body scrub and was pleasantly surprised that in place of the beads they’re using environmentally-friendly ‘corn kernel meal’! Suprisingly effective 🙂

  8. Clinique’s airbrush concealer is lovely and brightening for the under eye and Lisa Eldridge highly recommends it. I’ll have to check out those eye shadow sticks, quick and easy application is my go to! Mally make nice ones, a little shimmery though.

  9. I’d recommend the Becca under eye brightener. It’s lightweight feeling but packs a punch in terms of coverage and brightening. And the formula finishes nicely on the skin. You could grab it at 15% off now during the Sephora VIB sale too! Buts its definitely worth a try!! Xoxo a fellow mom : )

  10. Jen- i first tried macs prep & prime in radiant rose months ago and didn’t like it but….then I mixed it with my concealer and oh my gosh it is perfection. I use nars concealer in custard. I dot some under my eyes and then dot some of the prep and prime and use a beauty blender. Really good combo!

  11. i’m with you on that CC cream. i feel like i have to use a lot to get the coverage tiffany suggested it gives and it just doesnt seem to sit right on my skin. im thinking it might be better when its warmer out. also the caviar sticks my friend raves about them but they always crease on her ! i sorta feel like saying uh…why do u like them so much ! i will have to check out the balm ones. i sorta like the benefit pot cream shadows though they dry out pretty quick and i only like one or 2 shades.
